Not only does a ton of unavailable players affect a game, but it changes practice during the week. The rust was showing instantly for the Buckeyes.
Fitzgerald and his Wildcats began the game moving the ball offensively and stopping Ohio State on defense. It was an ideal start for Northwestern.
If there would be any complaint from Wildcat fans, it would be that their team did not capitalize enough on Justin Fields interceptions. The lack of ability to score touchdowns kept the door wide open for the Buckeyes despite the 10-6 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the OSU defense was relentless and forced Peyton Ramsey into several mistakes. Ramsey was nearly perfect in the first half but that didn’t last. He threw two interceptions and fumbled once. The running game also got shut down.
The Ohio State offense struggled in the passing game today and Fields appeared to injure his thumb. In the second half, the coaching staff began to catch on to the fact that the offensive line was dominating and Trey Sermon was unstoppable.
Sermon went on to break Eddie George’s Ohio State single game rushing record with 331 yards. Not only were those yards an OSU record but also a Big Ten Championship game record. Sermon also scored two touchdowns leading Ohio State to a 22-10 win.
Not only is this Ohio State’s fourth straight B1G Championship, the Buckeyes now move to 6-0 and await a probable playoff birth tomorrow.
Northwestern falls to a strong 6-2 and could end up with a solid bowl game matchup.
