Seeking their first win in nearly a week, the Cleveland Guardians bested the Detroit Tigers for the fifth time this season in a 3-2 win. Despite the score being a close one, the Tigers, boasting the best offense in the month of June, were held to just two hits in another dazzling performance by Bibee.
Moving to 38-33, the Guardians may still have to sit behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central Division. As of Friday night, the White Sox hold an 8-2 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the bottom of the second, freshly acquired catcher Patrick Bailey kicked off the scoring for the home team with an RBI single to shallow center field.
Following suit, Brayan Rocchio shot a triple out to right to bring home Bailey and give Cleveland a 2- 0 lead.
Debuting for the Tigers, James Outman brought in Detroit’s first hit of the ballgame, in the form of his first home run of 2026. Despite the solo shot cutting the lead in half, the Tigers would only bring in one more hit.
Bibee dominated the next five innings, sending down nearly every batter, as Zach McKinstry reached first base on an error in the fifth. The talented young right-handed pitcher showed that if the Guardians can provide just a smidge of run support, they can win.
Steven Kwan broke through an RBI drought in the bottom of the sixth inning; his single out to center field brought home Angel Martinez.
Trailing 3-1 in the top of the eighth, Spencer Torkelson hit a lead-off one-run homer and sent Bibee to the bench. Despite the disappointing finish, it was another great day of work for Bibee, as he departed with eight strikeouts in seven two-run innings.
Coming in the bottom of the ninth was Cade Smith, looking to lock down his 22nd save of the season. He did just that, making quick work of the middle of Detroit’s lineup.
Saturday’s contest, scheduled for a 4:10 p.m. first pitch, will be Cleveland’s most anticipated game of 2026 so far.
Returning to the mound for Detroit will be 2025 American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, making his first start since April 29th. Eyes from around the league will be looking towards Progressive Field tomorrow, and the Guardians will need to cut out the noise and keep going.
It’s also going to be Gavin Williams bobblehead giveaway night-even more incentive for the home team.
