Berea-Midpark Titans Show Heart In Comeback Win Over Avon Lake Shoregals

This recap is brought to you by – https://keeonsports.com/sponsors/

The most accurate thing I can I say about this Berea-Midpark Lady Titan team that a stat sheet or final score may not indicate, is the fact they play with heart and can overcome any slow start because of it.  The Titans did it again tonight as they came thundering back from a dismal first half that saw them only score 12 points to win 42-32 in commanding fashion.

As mentioned, the Titans bounced back from a 18-12 halftime deficit, to take control in the second half.  Their defensive was on point and forced the Avon Lake Shoregals to commit a whopping 21 turnovers before it was all over. They would outscore Avon Lake 21 – 7 in the third to tie the game, then pull away in the fourth.

The Titans have so many talented shooters that you just never now who is going go off to beat the opponent.  Tonight, it was once again Lauren Lantow with 14 points to lead the Titans.  Kendall Braaten picked up 13 points with 10 of them coming in the second half comeback.  Kierney Murphy did it all tonight, when she was not forcing turnovers, she was scoring some big points, as she finished in double digits as well with 10.

Marisa Summerfield led the Shoregals with 10 points as she continues to rise the ranks and become one of the best Sophomore sensations in the SWC.  We’ve only begun to see how good Summerfield can be. If you give her time, and with the right seasoning and skill development, Summerfield can become one of the top players in this conference next season.  Mark my words on that!

Also, Kaylee Kuwalu who is known for her airtight defense, she stepped it up on offense tonight with 5 points for the Shoregals.  Izzie Polinko is a freshman to keep your eyes on and she had two points tonight as well.  Brynn Bondar scored 3 while Courtney Borland had 4 in the defeat for Avon Lake.

  1. What a great second half comeback by Midpark. They made the adjustments to get the win . Our Shoregals played with heart tonight . Seems they have been getting out coached in every game . In all my years of following AL girls hoops I have never witnessed a 3 win team this late in the season. This group is young and talented they show they can play with anyone at times . I feel bad . Not to point fingers but I think it’s coaching . The style he uses with this group doesn’t work . Something has to change . This group deserves better . I know I’m not the only one who see this … Go Shoregals

  2. That’s embarrassing. Is the AD just going to watch the crumble and girls leave or actually take an interest in girls sports, proper coaches, committed leaders? AD is to blame 100% for letting this continue.

  3. As a father of a daughter and hopefully a future shoregal we need a coach that cares about the kids . My daughter has said multiple times kids will leave to go to joe’s or Mags to play if this continues. I think they really need to evaluate after the season and move in a different direction. Get a coach that’s a coach , who’s committed to Avon lake girls basketball. We need a energetic guy to revitalize our program !

  4. How about these thoughts:
1- if you’re going to throw stones as coaches or players, grow up and own up and put your name by your comments. These comments are chicken ‘stuff’ and shouldn’t be allowed without a verified name. Regardless of the coach, you’ve got someone that’s surely underpaid, even if they’re lazy and doing minimum in-season stuff, they’re underpaid for the time the put in and don’t deserve anonymous firing demands.

2- anyone consider the correlation between soccer success and other sport struggles? When soccer gets a talented kid, they lock them into year round training and full year leagues that prohibit playing other sports or make it very challenging, including basketball. Since soccer gets them first (both in age and fall season), the coaches have a leg up in keeping them engaged year round.

3- anyone consider that possibly the kids could work harder in the off-season, or are young/inexperienced or are just not athletically gifted or parents could invest more time in pushing their kids. I 100% realize a lot of this comes back to the coach and the coach may be terrible (I have no clue) but I’ve seen talented players overcome weak coaching at the HS level.

  5. I couldn’t agree with you more. I just think from reading the above comments people are frustrated. What I get from it is people obviously want a change. I don’t think they called for a firing but more of a evaluation at the end of the season to see what’s best for the program . The games I have been to this year the girls are playing hard and bring it every night and have come up short in a lot of games . Maybe it’s the coaches system maybe it doesn’t fit with girls on the team . My 2 cents probably doesn’t matter but bottom line it should be about culture and building a program that will be strong for years to come . And all the good HS teams in the area have great youth programs and the HS staff is involved to get the kids excited to play for there school program. And I know firsthand that I have not once seen a varsity girls or boys coach come see a youth basketball game to see what’s coming up in the program . And maybe that’s why people want a change to get someone who will change the culture and get our kids excited about AL basketball !
    Good luck
To our lady shoregsls the rest of the season !!
