Berea-Midpark Titans Defeat Amherst Steele Comets In Shut Out Win

The Berea-Midpark Titans toppled the Amherst Steele Comets in convincing fashion, 53-0. The beginning of the first quarter seemed to be a battle of the defenses as neither offense seemed to be clicking. Toward the end of the first quarter, the Titans struck. Quarterback Daniel Bowser completed his jet sweep touch pass to his receiver, Austin Clay, for a 4-yard touchdown. The first quarter ended with Berea-Midpark up, 7-0.

The second quarter was where things really started to amp up for the Titans. Berea-Midpark had the ball within the five-yard line again. This time it was Bowser shoveling it to Devyn Zahursky for a 3-yard score. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, the Titans went up 13-0. However, it wasn’t just the offense that was on a roll. Berea-Midpark’s special teams unit got into the action, too. Jacob Sikula blocked a Cole Norris punt and scooped it up at the Comets 32-yard line. Just as the Titans were going for another touchdown, Daniel Bowser’s pass was picked off by David Dudziak of the Comets.

Amherst looked to use this as a push to start a comeback. However, that didn’t happen. The Titan defense did not fold though, taking the ball right back with an interception of Norris’s pass by Justin McDonnell. He then returned the ball back to the Comets 6-yard line. Additionally, Berea-Midpark would capitalize on the Amherst mistake, punching in another touchdown run by Daniel Bowser. Amherst just couldn’t get anything going on offense as they turned the ball over on downs back to the Titans. Berea-Midpark was once again in the red zone. A possible opportunity for the Comets to get the ball back arose as the Titans went for it on fourth down.

Berea-Midpark brought in their jumbo package, putting Devyn Zahursky at quarterback in a wildcat formation. Zahursky took the snap and ran the ball himself into the endzone for a 21-yard touchdown. The PAT was missed after a personal foul on the previous play which bumped the extra point back a few yards. The Titan defense stepped up big as Austin Laforce intercepted a Cole Norris pass off a deflection. Berea-Midpark’s offense went right back to work, tacking on another six. Daniel Bowser completed his pass to Jonas Lauver in the back of the endzone from three yards out. After another missed two-point conversion, Berea-Midpark led Amherst 32-0 at halftime.

The second half wasn’t all too kind for the Comets either. Berea-Midpark kept its foot on the gas, handing the ball off to Noah Silva who scampered his way to a 35-yard touchdown. The Titan defense didn’t let up, intercepting Cole Norris again. However, it was Deandre Borders of the Titans this time, who returned the interception for a 53-yard pick-six.

Unfortunately, Cole Norris’s night continued to spiral. Maddox Swisher picked him off, giving the Titan defense four interceptions on the night. The scoring was capped off by Adriel Mendez who rumbled his way to a 25-yard touchdown. As the clock hit zeros, Berea-Midpark proved they are still a team to be reckoned with.

Amherst falls to 3-2 after this game. They look to bounce back next week as they travel to Avon Lake to take on the Shoremen. Conversely, Berea-Midpark improves to 2-3 as they look to carry this momentum into a matchup with the Midview Middies at home next week.
