Bay Village Wins Instant Classic in OT Thriller 10-9 Over Rival River to Advance to State Final Four

Four goals from Riley LaVogue, including an epic overtime winner, sent the Bay Village Girls Lacrosse team to the State Final Four tonight with a 10-9 win at rival Rocky River in an instant classic!  LaVogue finished with 4 for the Rockets while Rivers top scorer tonight was Grace Dewitt with a Hat Trick.

Rocky River built a 5-1 lead at halftime with goals from Olivia Konopka, Grace Dewitt, Reagan Connelly, Alexis Tisler and Mackenzie Russell. It was an incredibly well spread-out attack as five different girls scored to build the lead.

The Rockets began their comeback with three goals early into the second half to cut it to 5-4 and make it a game.  The goals came from Jill Tennant, Meredith Florez and Riley LaVogue.  It was suddenly a one goal game, less than 10 minutes into the second half, and we knew we were headed for a classic from that point on.

Feeling the pressure from the Rockets, the Pirates responded with a goals from Reagan Connelly and Grace Dewitt who scored their second each, to build the lead back up to 3 at 7-4 with 12:37 remaining.  It was then that the Rockets once again answered with three straight goals in thrilling fashion to tie the game.  The scores came from Ella Boehringer, Bridget Brown and Jill Tennant to tie it at 7 with 8:54 left in regulation as it took the Rockets less than 4 minutes to tie it.

All knotted up at 7, every shot became crucial for both sides as it was anyone’s game, it was then that Riley Lavogue scored her second goal of the night to give the Bay Village Rockets their first lead of the contest at 8-7 with 8:10 left.

River wouldn’t stay down long however and struck back shortly after that with a goal from Olivia Konopka with 6:55 to play.  The game remained tied until Riley LaVogue struck again with her third goal of the game.  The LaVogue hat trick put the Rockets ahead 9-8 with just a little over 4 minutes left.

It appeared as though the Rockets would hold onto the lead and advance to the State Final Four as they maintained the lead for the better part of the next 4 minutes until River had possession of the lemon and took a time out with 35 second to set up one final attempt to tie the game, and send it into overtime.

It took a few moments to get everything right, but Grace Dewitt saw her opening with 9 seconds left to shoot, tie the game, send it to overtime and send the fans into a frenzy as this crosstown rivalry hit epic proportions.

LaVogue showed everyone once again, why she is considered the top player in the state by sending the Rockets to the State Final Four next weekend. It took nearly the entire overtime, but eventually LaVogue had the walk off winner.

Good luck to the Rockets and congrats to the Pirates on a tremendous season.
