BAY VILLAGE, OH – The Bay Village Girls basketball team has been getting better each game this season and on the verge of blasting off, they finally got all systems to go at once in a massive 63-42 win today over Holy Name. The Rockets were firing on all cylinders as head coach Lauren Heldt worked her magic in a very impressive win for the Rockets. What truly made it incredible is the Rockets leading scorer, and main threat to win GLC Player of the year, Lucy Bisson didn’t even play. Heldt is doing the best coaching work of her career right now, very impressive!
Without Bisson on the court, several other Rockets stepped up to have gigantic games. Bay Village was led by Norah Trefz who had a career high 28 points. Quinn O’Leary was rock solid too with 15 points while Sophia Sharpnack had 4 and Grace Manoloff chipped in with 5. It was Maddie Bigler, Andy Naughton and Megan Maybaum with 2 each as Caroline Chilton finished with 1.
The Rockets won the tipoff and instantly got points on the O’Leary bucket to start things off. Nearly 90 seconds went off the clock before we saw points again, and once again, it was Quinn O’Leary attacking the rim for a basket. She then stole the inbound pass and got to the line where she split the pair to make it 5-0 Rockets. O’Leary wasn’t done yet and a few possessions later, took to the edge and put one off the glass from the side, to make it 7-0 Rockets.
After a Weingart Basket, it was a Sophie Sharpnack jumper that found nothing but net, to give the Rockets their first double digit lead of the day, at 11-0 with 4:22 still to play I the first quarter. The Rockets were far from done and just kept scorching the hoop. At one point it was 15-0 with 2:43 to go when Holy Name head coach Chris Petitti made a five for five switch, hoping to shake things loose for the Namers. Bay Village took a commanding 23-5 lead after one, with the only Namer points coming on a MaryElise Rispoli 3 ball and Claire Coljohn foul shots.
A Claire Coljohn layup to start the second quarter led to the Namers putting on a full court press, which led to a turnover on the inbound, which led to a beautiful runner off the glass by Rispoli that cut the Rocket lead to 23-9. The next time the Namers tried it, the Rockets blew past it and it led to a three pointer from Trefz, her second of the game at that point, and points 6,7 and 8 at that point in the game. All this action coming in the first 60 seconds of the second quarter.
Holy Name once again attempted to put 10 fresh legs on the court with another 5 for 5 switch at the 6:49 mark of the second quarter. It didn’t do much to turn the tide however, as the Rockets continued to pour it on, taking a 40-20 lead into the break, and the eventual 63-42 win as the second half was played pretty much dead even.
