by BAY VILLAGE, OH – The Bay Rockets soared to a 43-28 victory against the visiting Elyria Pioneers today. The Rockets were fueled by the dynamic senior Lucy Bisson who continues to be a front runner for the GLC MVP this season. Bisson proved she could score from anywhere in a 17-point barrage as she scored in every quarter, a variety of ways. Bisson had 6 points from deep, and 3 points from the charity stripe as part of her big day. She can score inside or outside, as her game continues to get better each time out.
Also doing some damage for the Rockets today was Grace Manoloff with 7 and Norah Trefz with 6. Sophie Sharpnack had 4 while Andy Naughton and Quinn O’Leary each had 3 points. Rounding out the scoring for Bay Village was Caroline Chilton with 2 and Anna Weingart with 1.
The Pioneers were led by KaMariana Scott, Sirrah Drummer and Kloe Troutman with 6 each. Hayli Hendrix had some nice flashes today as she finished with 4 points while Maia Lunn, T’Asia and Ava Wahn each finished with 2.
The first 4 minutes were all Rockets as Lucy Bisson and Grace Manoloff both hit threes on their way to a quick 8-0 start to the contest. The Rockets weren’t done and ran their lead out to 15-0 with another bucket from Bisson, followed by a basket from Norah Trefz and a three-ball drained by Quinn O’Leary. The Rockets used strong defense to turnover the Pioneers and convert them into points, time and time again. The Pioneers managed to avoid the first quarter shutout with 1:49 left when KaMariana Scott hit a three. The quarter ended with the Rockets in front 15-3.
The second quarter started a bit slow, with only 3 total Bay Village points scored in the first 2 and a half minutes before Lucy Bisson drained one from long distance to open it up to 21-3 Rockets. Once again, tight Rocket defense helped keep a seal on the lid for Elyria, as the Pioneers didn’t see their first points of the quarter until 4:17 in the quarter remaining, the point coming on a T’Asia Easley foul shot.
The Rockets went on to cruise to a 26-4 halftime lead. The smothering Rocket defense held the Pioneers without a field goal the entire second quarter, and only one in the first half.
Down 22 points to start the second half, the Pioneers were in desperation mode for points and started it nicely with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 26-11 with 5:19 to go in the half. The Rockets settled down after a coach Lauren Heldt timeout and finished strong from the 36-17 lead after three.
The Pioneers made a mini push in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as the Rockets came away with the 43-28 victory. The Rockets didn’t make a single field goal in the fourth quarter but did sink 7 from the foul line to put away Elyria. The Rockets will next travel to Berea-Midpark this coming Wednesday to take on the Titans. The Elyria Pioneers will host Columbia that same evening.
