Barberton Stuns Aurora in Their Homecoming Game 35-14.

A huge matchup between the Barberton Magic’s and Aurora Greenmen got week 8 of Ohio High School football kicked off. Barberton was led by Junior running back Xzavier Macon. Macon had 22 rushes for 262 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also got some help from his fellow Junior classmate, Quarterback Dominic Wilson who went 6/8 with 49 yards. He also rushed the ball 7 times for 74 yards. Aurora had some players shine as well.

Starting with Senior Quarterback Matt Geiger who went 8/12 for 91 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 11 times for 32 yards. His favorite target tonight was Tight End Jayce Unverferth. Unverferth had 3 catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. Barberton would win the game 35-14 in an upset on homecoming night in Aurora.

In the first quarter Barberton would receive the kickoff and it wouldn’t take long for them to find success. On a third and 8 from their own 24 yard line the Magic’s would give the ball to Junior Running back Xzavier Macon and he would take it 76 yards for a touchdown. Barberton led 7-0 with nine minutes left in the first quarter.

Aurora would be forced to punt on their first drive and Barberton would be looking to capitalize. Running Back Xzavier Macon would make another huge play. Macon would take off from the 30 yard line and run it 69 yards and be brought down at the one yard line. On third down from the one yard line, Barberton’s Junior Quarterback would plunge forward on a QB sneak and score. This would give the Magic’s a 14-0 lead with two minutes left in the quarter. Aurora would get the ball and be driving as the surfer came to an end. Barberton had the lead 14-0.

The second quarter saw the Greenmen driving. Aurora got it across midfield, but would face a fourth and long. On that fourth and long Aurora Senior Quarterback Matt Geier would find Junior Tightend Jayce Unverferth for a 44 yard touchdown pass. This cut the Barberton lead to 14-7 with 9:15 remaining in the half.

Both teams would punt on their next possessions as the defenses were battling in the wet conditions. But, Barberton would respond with back to back 19 yard passing gains from Dominic Wilson to Noah Dehart. This got the Magic’s to the 15 yard line and from there, Macon would score again on a 15 yard rushing touchdown. His second of the night, and would put the Magic’s lead up to 21-7 with a minute left in the half. The halftime score would stay the same, Barberton ahead 21-7.

Out of halftime the Magic defense came out strong. Barberton sacked Aurora QB Matt Geier twice on the drive and forced a turnover on downs around midfield. The Magic offense couldn’t get anything going though and would be forced to punt. Barberton would stand strong on defense and on their next drive, Xzavier Macon would break off another big run. This time it was a 33 yard gain to end the third quarter. The score was still 21-7 with Barberton leading.

In the final quarter of play, the Magic’s running back Xzavier Macon would score his third touchdown of the night from seven yards out, making the score 28-7 with 11:50 remaining in the game. The Greenmen again could not capitalize as their offense was just stagnant all night. Barberton would get the ball back and that’s when Quarterback Dominic Wilson would break off a 56 yard run to get inside the 10 yard line. From there, it would be Xzavier Macon once again scoring a seven yard touchdown. Macon would end up with his fourth touchdown of the night, and the Magic led 35-7 with 8:40 left in the game.

Aurora would be forced to punt once again, but on the punt, the backup QB and Punter Ryan Dwyer’s knee hit the ground and the Magic’s took over with great field position. But, the Greenmen defense would make a rare stop this game and force a turnover on downs. Aurora would go on a nice long drive and end up punching it in. Senior running back Mason Ganzhorn would score a two yard touchdown to make the score 35-14 with 35 seconds remaining in the game. The final score was Barberton beating Aurora 35-14.

The player of the game today was Barberton Junior Running back Xzavier Macon who had 22 carries for 262 yards and four touchdowns.

Next week the Aurora Greenmen will be at home to take on the Highland Hornets.

The Barberton Magic will take on Cuyahoga Falls at home.
