Avon Soars over Brunswick in 38-0 shut out

Avon went into Brunswick after losing their entire offense after reaching the final four just a season ago. Brunswick had high expectation walking into this game behind the arm of QB Ethan Fritz. Fritz gave the Blue Devils a lot to look forward to after stepping into the QB1 spot after an injury last season to the starter.

Fritz looked good on the first pass of the game launching a 30-yard pass over the Avon defense. That was the biggest gain of the drive after stalling out due to penalties. Avon drove down the field quickly resulting in a 45-yard field goal by star kicker Nathanial Vakos. Fritz and company couldn’t get much going the following possession resulting in a three in out.

Avon’s junior QB Sam DeTillio made his first start for the Eagles. He was able to show his ability on the ground and in the air. DeTillio scored the first touchdown of the season for the Eagles on a designed QB run as the offensive line led the way for DeTillio, giving him a clear bath to break away at the line of scrimmage.

Avon scored again in the first half on a designed screen play to sophomore running back Gavin Ehrhardt for a 40-yard touchdown. Ehrhardt had a fantastic game on the ground today having over 130 yards of total offense for the Eagles.

Near the end of the first half Fritz and the Blue Devils offense started to get things going with creative offensive plays and elusive running from running back David Hamrick. Brunswick was able to get into the redzone of Avon, but a missed field goal by Noah Bartzak was the closest that the Blue Devils would get to scoring points the rest of the game.

After a 17-0 first half by Avon, Brunswick looked to get a quick stop to start the second half. Instead, Avon was able to score due to DeTillio throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to extend the Eagle lead. Avon scored once more before putting subs into the game.

Two fourth quarter touchdowns increased the lead to 38-0. Avon leaves week one 1-0 after a dominating victory over Brunswick. The Eagles fast paced sugar huddle offense was too quick for the Brunswick defense as they controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish.

Brunswick falls to 0-1. Expect QB Ethan Fritz and RB David Hamrick to have strong showings as they start league play next week.
