Avon Sends Message To Youth Program With 63-21 Over Lorain

It was youth night in Avon as the “mini Eagles” 3rd grade teams had a scrimmage at halftime.  It was the perfect night for the young ballers to learn from the Varsity team as well, as the Big Eagles soared to a commanding 63-21 victory.  They youngsters were loud and locked into the game, and it speaks volumes for the youth program in Avon and the reason why they churn out winner after winner.

The Eagles sunk 9 from behind the three point line, for 27 of their 63 points. Brooke Laub made 2 from deep, while Grace Mangan sunk 4 of them, Madigan O’Leary, Elena Agostin and Anna Fitch each had one as well. They moved the ball and got everyone involved as a whopping 13 players made the score sheet! A perfect lesson to the youth in the crowd watching their heroes!

The only sour note for the Eagles, was the 11 foul shots missed, or else this may have been a 50-point victory. Still, even with that, Avon fans have to be encouraged with the heart of this team and just how well they are coached.  I’ll say it again, this is a very dangerous team to have to play down the stretch!

The Avon Eagles overcame a 1 for 8 start at the foul line to build a quick 12-5 lead.  They were aided by three balls from Brooke Laub who stayed hot coming off her big game at Amherst over the weekend, and two quick ones from deep by Grace Mangan.  A few moments later, the Eagles got back to back buckets from Sarai Kittelberger to extend the lead to 16-4. Grace Mangan then buried her third three of the quarter as the Eagles took a 19-7 lead after one.

The points were hard to come by at the times in the second quarter, but a three ball by Elena Agostin coupled with buckets from Drenik and Bengu, helped the Eagles build the lead to 28-10 with 1:56 to go as the Titans could only respond with very little offense of their own. The final 2 minutes saw 4 more points from Agostin and Holbrook as Avon held a 32-10 at the break.

Brooke Laub lifted the lid of the second half with another three pointer and it was all Eagles from there.  By the four-minute mark of the half, they extended the lead to 43-15.  The Titans then hit back to back buckets to close the gap to 43-20.  However, that is the closest they would get as the Eagles only let up one more point the rest of the way.

The fourth quarter belonged to Emma Owens who poured in 8 more as the Eagles put it away for good with the 63-21 victory.  The Eagles next play on Saturday as they travel to Avon Lake to take on crosstown rivals, the Avon Lake Shoregals.
