Avon Lake Shuts Out Competition At Elyria’s Homecoming Game 28-0

Elyria, OH: It may have been homecoming for the Pioneers, but it was all Avon Lake as the Shoremen shut out the Pioneers 28-0. Senior QB Alex Affolter led the way for the Shoremen, accounting for all four touchdowns, three passing and one rushing.

Early on, though, the teams battled at a stalemate. The Shoremen offense moved the ball more, but the Pioneer defense would do just enough to stop them. It was in the 2nd quarter when the Shoremen offense started to click. On their first drive of quarter number 2, senior WR Aidan Stewart would begin with a 23-yard rush to get the offense moving. Following a rush of no gain, Affolter would go to the air; he found RB Michael Summerfield for a 38-yard TD pass and catch to give the Shoremen the lead.

Affolter would not wait to throw his next TD pass. On the first play of the next Shoremen offensive possession, he would find fellow senior Devin Drew for a 45-yard TD pass. That would make the score 14-0 in favor of the Shoremen.

On the ensuing kickoff, junior Jacory Bradley took it 73 yards, giving the Pioneers first and goal on the Shoremen 10-yard line. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, that would be the only highlight of the sequence and one of the few highlights of the game. After a few minimal gains and a penalty, the Pioneers would try running a trick play, letting senior WR Steve Maiher throw a pass, which was intercepted by Virginia Tech commit Luke Stuewe, which after a penalty would net 43 yards. On the 3rd play of the ensuing possession, Affolter would do it himself and run 24 yards for a TD, making it 21-0, which would be the halftime score.

Avon Lake would get the ball to begin the 2nd half, and they would resume where they left off. On the 4th play of the drive, Affolter found Stuewe for a 36-yard TD pass to make it 28-0 in favor of the Shoremen.

On their next drive, the Shoremen would run, six times to be exact, with runs from junior RB Ezra Jones and senior Alex Kowalski. Following a penalty, they would send out kicker Reece Polomsky. This kick from 48 yards would hit the crossbar.

The Pioneers would get another highlight, this time on defense. Alex Affolter would have his only lowlight on the next Shoremen drive, as the Pioneers’ Kevin Jordan would intercept his pass to the end zone.

The Pioneer’s final highlight of the night would come on the next Shoremen possession; the Pioneers would force another Shoremen turnover, this time recovering a fumble. Neither team’s offense would gain much traction, and the Shoremen would come away victorious 28-0.

The Shoremen improved to 5-2 with the win, including a four-game winning streak, and 4-0 in SWC play. They will head home for a big test vs Olmsted Falls.

For the Pioneers, the loss puts them at 0-7, including a 0-4 mark in SWC play. The journey becomes more challenging for the Pioneers as they head to Amherst next week to take on the Comets of Amherst Steele.

Player of the game: Avon Lake, QB #2, Alex Affolter. 10/14 187 yards passing 3 TD,1 INT, six carries for 30 yards rushing 1 TD. Affolter did it all for the Shoremen, being a part of every TD they scored on the day.
