The Avon Lake Shoremen charged into the Midview Middies house Friday night and dominated for a wire-to-wire victory, 48-7. How did it all happen? Well, the game began with Avon Lake drawing first blood. On their first possession and play, quarterback Alex Affolter threw a 34-yard touchdown to Derek McCrum. Following that, their second drive of the game was a success with a 1-yard touchdown by Jake Bova. With 2:30 minutes left in quarter number one, the Shoremen led, 13-0.
More prolific offense took place during the next 12 minutes. Affolter continued to deal, and this time, Carter Bork was the recipient of a 63-yard catch and score. Unfortunately, Midview could not find any sort of rhythm all night with Avon Lake’s vicious defensive approach. Additionally, Jake Bova would find the pylon on the team’s fourth drive for his second touchdown.
This buzzsaw-like offense showed its versatility to be methodical as well. The Shoremen conducted a nine-play drive, resulting in an Affolter to McCrum connection for 24 yards. That was good for the receiver’s second score, too. All of this incredible work put both sides of the ball into a comfortable position with a 34-0 advantage into the half.
For the last 24 minutes of play, the Shoremen continued to assert themselves as a force to be reckoned with. The defense also got into the scoring department, with Will Sindelar scooping up a fumble and returning it for six. To put the finishing touches on this one, Owen Fach raced to the endzone for a 57-yard scamper. The score read 48-0 at the end of three. However, Midview continued to persevere. With five minutes remaining the Middies Dior Jones crossed paydirt from five yards out.
With this loss, the Middies fall to sub .500 to 2-3. What hurts a little more is that they remain winless in the Southwestern Conference at 0-2. As for the Avon Lake Shoremen, they move to 4-1 on the season. Furthermore, the team is conversely 2-0 in the conference, which is important right around postseason time. Currently, they have sole control of second place, with the Avon Eagles in first at 5-0 (2-0). Midview is second to last and they will travel to face another conference foe in Berea-Midpark. Avon Lake will head back home to face in-conference rival Amherst (Steele).
