To start the 2022 high school football season the Shoremen of Avon Lake sail onto to shores of Strongsville to face the Mustangs.
At the start of the game both teams struggled to move the ball. Jermey Dzik and his Shoremen struggled to get a first down early in the game. They would have a three and out for their first two possessions as the Mustangs seemed to sniff everything out.
The Mustangs offense was able to get a steady run game going but came up short every time they arrived to Avon Lakes side of the field. Sophomore QB Nolan Beard looked solid for the first possession but struggled with two incomplete passes to end their second possession.
Avon Lake eventually found their stride in the beginning of the second quarter as they implemented a mix of steady runs and consistent pass plays. Dzik would connect with Matthew Stewe and Issac Richardson to drive down the field. These three would set up a rushing touchdown for running back Wade Nelson for the first score of the game (7-0 Avon Lake).
The Three headed monster for Avon Lake would strike again setting up a short yardage situation to give Jason Krukowski a rushing touchdown to increase the Shoremen lead. (14-0 Avon Lake).
The Shoremen would start their final drive on their own four-yard line, they struggled to move down the field but had help thanks to a pass interference call that would kick start the Shoremen offense helping them put together a last second drive. The drive would end with a 31 yard field goal by kicker Ian Walsh (17-0 Avon Lake).
Both teams have a different question at the break, Strongsville must ask, how do we get back in this game while Avon Lake is asking how to run away with the lead.
Sadly, for the Mustangs their fate wouldn’t change, the offense would fail to get much of anything going for the rest of the game.
Strongsville would get the ball back as the Mustangs had a desire to change the course of the game. Things went very bad for the Mustangs as a blocked punt from Avery Viancourt would result in a scoop and score touchdown to increase the lead (24-0 Avon Lake).
Avon Lake would continue to keep the foot on the pedal as the air attack from the Shoremen made things easy for the rushing attack to tack on another touchdown (31-0 Avon Lake)
Avon Lake would force the mercy rule late in the third quarter thanks to a drive led by Sophomore running back Anthony Benedict (38-0 Avon Lake).
This score remained as the Shoremen held the Mustangs to zeros points. This ensured a week one victory as Avon Lake hopes of an early season winning streak are well and alive.
The Back attack snacks player of the game is Jeremy Dzik, he recorded no touchdowns but led his team with a dual threat attack with the help of his leading receivers Stewe and Richardson. Dzik showed major growth from last year, he made all the right decisions forming a steady and deadly attack.
Great recap. One small thing to note, field goal lengths are recorded from the point of the kick and include the end zone distance. So the field goal was a 31 yard field goal, not a 21 yard field goal.
