What can be said about the Avon Lake defense this season that hasn’t already been told? This unit appears to be unstoppable and paving the way to a possible Division II state championship.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is a young man who started the season as Quarterback and placekicker, and is now entrenched in what appears to be the next Steel Curtain.
Harry Hebert earned the dual starting nod at QB this season along fellow flame thrower Michael Corbo. Injuries in the first game to several linemen on both sides of the ball, and linebackers forced Harry to move to defense full time.
Since then, there has been no looking back as the Shoremen have gone on to shut out 6 of their next 8 opponents. Quite frankly, if it wasn’t for a garbage time touchdown late against North Ridgeville, this squad would have 7 straight shutouts.
Also, when you really stop and break it down, looking back at that first week, Avon only had two positive drives all game that resulted in points, and one was on a short field. Sure, Harry’s name is on the award this week, but this is truly a victory and honor for the entire defense. As coach tells them, it is 11 playing as 1, and this unit proves that!
Congrats to Harry, but also the entire defense as a whole! This past weekend against North Olmsted, the Eagles never crossed the 50, and only crossed their own 20 twice, both times on penalties. The Shoremen will face perhaps their toughest test all season this week as they host Olmsted Falls.
