AVON LAKE – The Avon Lake Shoregals jumped out to a 24-2 lead after one quarter of play, and never looked back on route to a 58-14 dismantling of John Adams.  Brynn Bondar led them with 11 while Marisa Summerfield and Leah Hicov had 8 each.  Izzie Polinko had 5 as Jane Ritt went off for 9.  Sudden senior sensation Kaylee Kuwalu had 7 while Claire Springer put up 5 and Bre Jones scored 5 as well.

Avon Lake scored the first 7 points to start the game when Marisa Summerfield followed a Leah Hicov bucket with a three pointer.  Then it was Marisa Summerfield doing her best Reggie Miller routine with a steal of the inbound pass and then the quick two pointer to follow.  Leah Hicov would launch and land another three, and it was 10-0 exactly 3 minutes into the game with Leah and Marisa splitting the 10 points right down the middle.

Up 10-0, the Shoregals were just getting going, two foul shots by Claire Springer and then a runout by Bondar would make it 14-0, and force John Adams to call a timeout. Another three, this time by Bondar and then a jump shot from Springer increased the lead to 19-0. Seconds later Claire Springer would get the steal and then put up a missed shot that was followed by Bondar on the put back to make it 21-0.

John Adams wouldn’t score their first points of the game until there was 21 second lefts in the quarter.  It was Jane Ritt finishing the scoring with a three at the buzzer to close out the quarter 24-2 Shoregals.  The Ritt three ball was one of 4 in the quarter for Avon Lake.

Avon Lake actually started the second quarter slightly cold as they didn’t score their first points until after 3 and a half minutes went by before Leah Hicov buried a three ball. About a minute later it was Summerfield landing her second three ball of the game to put things out of reach 30-6 with 3 minutes left in the half as Summerfield and Hicov each had all 8 of their points in the first half.

From there, it became the Kaylee Kuwalu showcase as she began it by sinking two fouls shot and then followed it up with a breakaway layup.  Izzie Polinko finished the first half scoring with another three ball for Avon Lake as The Shoregals would take a 37-8 lead into the break.

If 8 points was bad for John Adams in the first half, it actually for worse for them in the second half as they were held to only 6 more as they fell 58-14.

  1. Dismantle is correct… our 8th grade could of beat John Adam’s . I’m proud to see our girls get a playoff win they deserve especially with the talent on this team . Hopefully we can can continue to advance … if not I hope that we can do a real evaluation and see about getting a new coach . I have been watching this guy for a decade and I think it’s time to go !
