The Avon Lake Shoregals won a hard-fought battle on the court against rival Avon Eagles 51-45. Both teams played extremely tough, physical basketball all 4 quarters. Avon Lake took the lead and never let it go. Avon hung tough, but ultimately ran out of time. The Shoregals took the win after losing 2 starters ,1 to foul trouble and the other to an injury. Shoregals coach Paul Appel praised the other girls who stepped up in their absence and praised a tough Avon team.

The Shoregals started off the game quickly after winning the tip-off. Marisa Summerfield took off like a rocket and sunk a 3 pointer from the corner to kick off the scoring for Avon Lake. Avon answered back quickly, putting 1 of 2 free throws in the basket. Both teams spent much of the first quarter trading steals, rebounds and points. The Lady Eagles kept things tight around the perimeter, but had some trouble in the paint. The Shoregals kept up tough defense in the paint, but allowed a lot of ball movement around the perimeter. The Shoregals led after 1 11-8.

Avon started the second quarter with a bang. The ball took a tour of the perimeter, ending up in the hands of Amelia Holbrook. Holbrook took the quick hit off the pass to start the action in the 2nd. Both teams kept things tight in the 2nd quarter trading scores, while Avon brought the game to within 2 points going into the half.

The Shoregals started the second half on a tear. Avon Lake went on an 8-0 run in the first 3 minutes of the quarter that started with a Marisa Summerfield layup as she drove to the hoop. Avon did not let that run discourage them as they came out and fought hard to keep the game close. Abby Owens helped keep the game close by making a number steal, a couple of rebounds and points. As time was running out in the 3rd, Avon’s Molly Drenik took 2 shots, got the rebounds of her own shots and passed to Brooke Laub to drain the 2. Avon Lake lead 37-30 after 3.

The fourth quarter was wild as you could feel the excitement in the gym. The Lady Eagles started the quarter with the ball and worked to reduce their deficit. At multiple points, they brought the game even as the clock ticked down. With 4:45 left in the game Avon was down by 1. The game came down to fouls for Avon, sending the Shoregals to the line to try and keep the game close. The Shoregals showed their dominance and were able to keep the lead and take home the win. Avon Lake Shoregals 51, Avon Lady Eagles 45.

The game had all the hallmarks of a rivalry game; hard fought, physical basketball. Neither team gave up until the final buzzer.

  1. Great win for the Shoregals! A sweep for Avon Lake this weekend!
Also, very sad that McKee will need to instill Paywalls to keep the site going. He covered my nephew in football and now my niece in basketball. I see not a single sponsor is either Avon Lake or Avon based, which is also shocking considering everything this site has done for both cities. Oh well. GO Lake!
