The Avon Lake girls basketball team continued their impressive season of improvement with a big win tonight at home, 43-24 over Lakewood, to advance to the next round of the postseason tournament.

The game got off to a bit of a slow start as it didn’t see it’s first points until Marisa Summerfield removed the lid on the rim with a little over 5 minutes to play in the opening quarter. Olivia Miller kept it going by draining a corner three on the next Shoregal’s possession. The Rangers wouldn’t see their first points of the game until 2:06 remained in the first quarter when Aya McAuliffe drained a three pointer to cut into the Avon Lake lead at 7-2.  Avon Lake led 11-3 after one.

A Bondar bucket a few minutes into the second increased the Avon Lake lead to 13-4.  Back to back baskets by Claire Springer a minute later, would extend the Shoregal lead once again, this time to 17-6 with 4:09 to play.  Summerfield drained a three at the 2:20 mark and ran the lead out to 20-6. The Rangers trailed 20-10 at the break, but stayed in it thanks in part to 10 big points from Aya McAuliffe.

Clutch shots to start the second half by Izzie Polinko and Summerfield ran the lead out to 25-10, as the 15 point lead was the largest of the game for Avon Lake.  Back to back Borland 3 pointers, brought the lead out to 31-10 and officially ended all doubt.

The Shoregals went on to win in commanding fashion 43-24 and play Medina in the next round of the tournament next Tuesday night.
