Avon Eagles Use High Scoring Attack to Defeat Rival Avon Lake 63-43

Avon head coach Maggie Ferrando took over a fresh look Avon Eagle team this season, and it may be early but if tonight was any indication on what their new look is going to be, I would expect coach Ferrando to pile up the Purple and Gold wins!  The Eagles beat their crosstown rivals 63-43 tonight with a run and gun style of quick shots, and physical play.  The Avon Lake Shoregals, simply couldn’t compete with the scoring bursts from Avon tonight.

Avon jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game, before some hot shooting from Marisa Summerfield allowed the Shoregals to comeback and tie it at 6 just a few minutes into the game. The hot shooting from both teams continued as three balls from Madigan O’Leary of Avon and Jane Ritt kept the nets scorching in the first with the score tied at 11 with still two plus minutes to play.

From there Avon went on a 6-1 run to finish the quarter up 17-12 thanks in part to a high tempo style of play and constant attacking of the rim.  It would be interesting to see if Avon Lake could make the defensive adjustments in the second quarter to slow down the high-octane attack of the Eagles.

The high paced attack of Avon, had Avon Lake in the foul bonus 34 seconds into the second quarter.  Brooke Laub made them pay with four made foul shots in the first 59 seconds of the quarter to build the Eagle to 21-12 right before a Bengu three ball doubled up the Shoregals as Avon led 24-12 as Avon Lake struggled to keep up with the run and gun style of their rival.  The Eagles were pouring it on all over the ball and creating turnovers and great chances because of it.

After a Marissa Summerfield three pointer cut it to 30-20 with 1:05 left in the first half, it looked like the Shoregals would stay in it going into the second half.  The Eagles had other plans however and scored 8 points in the next 65 seconds to lead 38-20 at the break, and put Avon Lake away for good.

The 8 point blitz came on the strength of a Abby Owens three pointer, followed by a Anna Fitch three ball shortly after that.  They finished the 8-0 run with an Amelia Holbrook fast break layup at the buzzer as they took a 38-20 lead into the break against a shell shocked Shoregal squad despite Summerfield scoring 13 points in the first 16 minutes for Avon Lake.

The second half was much more even as the Eagles hung on to cruise to a 63-43 victory.

  1. To the person ☝️who wrote this. I would like to say that we knew in Avon Lake when he got hired that he was never a head coach, so we have to be patient. Our AD went that direction when we had candidates with experience he chose him. Was he out coached yesterday, absolutely. Does he play to many girls, probably. Will he fix it and adjust time will tell.Go Shoregals
