We’ve always known that Brooke Laub is a great teammate, defender, passer and role model for younger players, but today in Amherst she reminded everyone she could score too as she poured in 23 to help the Eagles defeat the Comets 56-48. The Eagles trailed to start the final quarter but were unfazed as they outscored the Comets 19-10 in the final 8 minutes for the win.
Molly Dreniks first season back from injury continues to be a massive success as Drenik scored 8 for the Eagles and was a force on the boards once again. Drenik was 1 of 8 Eagles to score as they also received 4 from Anna Fitch, 2 from Makenzie Ptacek, 7 from Era Bengu, 3 from Emma Owens, 6 from Amelia Holbrook and 5 from Jocelyn George.
Kayla Ferancy overcame a slow start for a massive night for the Comets as she led then with 20. Kristen Kelley also reached double digits with 11 points. The “X-Factor” of this Comet team continues to be Ava Darmos who is one of the most underrated players in the conference in my opinion. Darmos was great today and hustled her way to 6 hard earned Comet points. Also scoring for Amherst was Natalie Pleban and Bradyn Silvasy with 3 each, while Joceyln George finished with 5.
The game started off a bit slow with only 8 total points in the first 4 minutes of play. Buckets by Silvasy and Ferancy earned the Comets the early 5-3 lead. Anna Fitch tied it at 5 at the 3:30 remaining mark with a nice cut inside. Moments later, Abby Owens put the Eagles ahead with a long three ball. From there, Fitch scored again to increase the lead to 10-5. The Eagles went on to lead 16-7 after one as 5 different Eagles scored in the period.
Era Bengu hit a three to get it started for the Eagles to begin the second quarter as Avon extended the lead to 19-7 quickly. The Comets responded with a mini 8-0 run after a mixture of buckets from George and Ferancy to cut the lead to 19-15. From there, Ava Darmos attacked the paint with buckets on back-to-back Comet possessions, and just like that, it was 19-19 as the Comets run reached 12 straight to open the second quarter and tie the game!
A Brooke Laub three from the top of the key would finally stop the Comet run. And regain the lead for the Eagles at 22-19. A few minutes later Laub would connect again from long range to build the Eagle lead back up to 25-19. Like clockwork, almost exactly a minute later, it was Laub again with another triple to extend the lead to 28-19. The game went to the half with that same score.
The Eagles brought the lead back out to double digits to start the second half with a Amelia Holbrook layup to get things going. From there, Kelley would get her first points of the game with a Comet three ball. The Comets were just getting started and managed to storm back and actually take a 1-point lead at 38-37 as they outscored the Eagles 19-9 in the quarter. Ferancy had 10 in the corner while Kelley had 7.
The Eagles began the fourth quarter down one, after leading most of the game. They were unfazed as a corner three from Amelia Holbrook got them going again and put them in front. It was part of a 9-0 run that also saw baskets from Laub and Drenik to build the Eagle lead to 46-38 before a Natalie Pleban three ball slowed it down for a bit. The Eagles went on to maintain the lead and secure the 56-48 victory.
I can’t believe with all the talent on that comets team they are 500, and 3-6 in SWC. Those girls play so hard. I like Rositano but man he should of kept coaching the boys. I don’t know how many times he gets warned for staying out of the coaches box. Poor guy needs to think about hanging up the clipboard.
