Avon – The Avon Eagles (4-0) took on the Elyria Pioneers (0-4) in their Southwestern Conference opener at Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet Stadium in week 4 of OHSAA high school football action. The Avon Eagles were able to keep their hot streak going by beating the Elyria Pioneers by a score of 58 to 0.
From the start the Eagles offense and defense were a force to be reckoned with. Elyria received the opening kickoff and set the tone of the game from there. First play of the game there was a 75-yard catch and run touchdown off the hands of Eagles quarterback #5 Nolan Good to wide receiver #8 Matt Maxey. Then after getting the ball back the Eagles converted on another touchdown with another Maxey 16-yard catch and run touchdown. The Eagle’s defense was spot on forcing the Pioneer offense to punt it away yet again. That Eagle’s offense kept on rolling completing another 38-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver #9 Cole Kepner and on their next drive they brought in quarterback #18 Trevor Maly. Eagles’ wide receiver #12 was able to snag Maly’s pass right out of the air and toe-touch his way in for a 4-yard touchdown.
With more Eagle defense domination, they forced a punt for the fourth time tonight and let the Eagle offense continue to have their way on the gridiron. The offense sent Good back in at quarterback. The Eagles drove all the way down and running back #7 Quiante’ Smith punched the ball in for a 1-yard touchdown. Elyria punted. The Eagles got back on offense and Good racked up his fourth touchdown pass of the night on a 27-yard pass to wide receiver #22 Fin Jerdonek. The Pioneer offense got the ball back and were able to get their first first down of the game. The Pioneers drove all the way down to the Eagles 4-yard line. With the Pioneers gaining some momentum and knocking on the door the Eagles defense intercepts the ball to finish out the half.
The Pioneers started out with the ball and hoped to grab some momentum, instead they ended up going into punt formation. Off a muffed snap the Pioneer kicker kicked the ball backwards out of the back of the end zone giving the Eagles a safety. With a running clock on their side the Eagles brought in quarterback #4 Carter Jenny. He lead the offense down and handed it off to running back #24 Jake Burns for a 22-yard Touchdown run. The Eagle’s defense flexed their muscles as the intercept the ball yet again. This lead to the Eagle’s offense passing to #8 Matt Maxey for a 26-yard touchdown. The Eagle’s defense forced yet another punt by the Pioneer offense. Some back-and-forth action ended the game with a final score of Eagles 58 to the Pioneers 0.
The player of the game goes to the entire Eagle offense. With 10 running backs they totaled 169 running yards and 3 touchdowns. The wide receivers were able to share the glory amongst the 8 of them with totaling 262 receiving yards and accounting for 5 touchdowns. #8 Maxey was able to catch 3 passes, 2 of which were touchdowns from 16 yards out and 75 yards out.
The Avon Eagles (4-0) will continue conference play as they host the North Ridgeville Rangers (4-0) at 7pm in week 5 for a showdown of two of the most dominant Southwestern Conference teams.
The Elyria Pioneers (0-4) will also continue conference play taking on the mighty Olmsted Falls Bulldogs (3-1) at home for week 5, kickoff is slated for 7pm.
