Twinsburg, Ohio – The Avon Eagles defeated the Stow Bulldogs, 59-40, to capture their first district crown since 2003.
Avon got off to a great start, leading 17-6 after the first quarter. Senior guard and Kent State football Nolan Good was a major part of the run, scoring 11 of his game high 20 in the opening stanza.
The Eagles would go on a 10-2 run in the second quarter, expanding their lead to 27-8. Ali Jaber also got involved, scoring five points in the stanza, and eight points in the first half. They held Stow without a second quarter field goal until late in the stanza, taking a 28-12 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs came out of the halftime break determined to cut into their deficit. Back-to-back triples from Austin Wilhoit cut the deficit to 28-18 early in the third quarter. However, the Eagles were able to maintain their margin despite only scoring two field goals in the quarter themselves. Andy Falasco had a late triple to increase the lead to 36-23 at the end of the third quarter.
Avon would pull away in the fourth quarter, as Joey Ziegler and Andy Falasco took a bigger role down the stretch. The sophomore guard, Ziegler, scored all 11 of his points in the final stanza, and Falasco had five points. The Eagles’ lead would increase to 21 points before the final buzzer sounded.
The Eagles advanced to the regional semifinals and will take on the New Albany/Columbus Northland winner at the College of Wooster on Wednesday, March 5th at 8:00pm.
In addition to Nolan Good’s 20 points, senior forward Ali Jaber had 15 points, and senior Andy Falasco had ten.
Saturday also marked the final game for Stow head coach Dave Close, who announced his retirement following the season. The Bulldogs were led by senior Cam Marconi, who finished with 18 points, followed by Austin Wilhoit with 15.
