Avon Comes Back to Defeat North Ridgeville

The Avon Eagles (8-1) earned a hard-fought win on the road over the North Ridgeville Rangers (2-5) 44-42. These two SWC opponents went back and forth all night long. It started from behind the arc. Both teams were trading three pointers in the first half. Avon had two of their own and North Ridgeville had four.
North Ridgeville Sophomore Brooke Schroeder had 12 points on the night, all three pointers. Senior Gabby Thibodeaux had 10 points, nine of those points accumulated by three pointers. In the 3rd quarter North Ridgeville had four three pointers and heading into the 4th quarter had a nine-point lead outscoring Avon 18 to 10 in the quarter.
Avon came storming right back and outscored North Ridgeville 19 to 8 in the 4th quarter to capture the come from behind win. I had a chance to catch up with Avon Eagles Head Coach Adam Castrilla about the big win. “Luckily for us we have played in a lot of close games, and I definitely think that helped us tonight. This team does not quit, and they just kept fighting and fighting and I couldn’t be prouder” Castrilla said.

Leading Avon’s comeback was Junior Abby Owens. She had 17 points on the night and had two key steals towards the end of the 4th quarter. Castrilla continued by saying “she is really good attacking that hoop. She is one of the few kids that have been in this situation before, really relying on that experience and I’m happy for her because she works really hard.”

I also asked Coach Castrilla about young star Sophomore Alaina Pagan who had nine points on the night. “We ask a lot of her, and I think sometimes what I try to do a little bit better is managing her minutes, I did today so she wasn’t dog-tired by the end of the game, but again doing a great job of picking up their kids, halfcourt man-man, making them uncomfortable, and made some big free throws down the stretch.”

With seconds left in the game North Ridgeville had the chance to take the lead or send it to overtime. The Rangers struggled with free throws on the night going 0/6 and missing four big free throws in the final’s minutes of the game. On one of those free throws the Rangers got their own rebound and made a three pointer but it did not count because a timeout was called and Avon secured the victory 44-42.

The Avon Eagles return home for a three-game homestand over the holiday break. They will take on the defending state champions in the Olmsted Falls Bulldogs this Saturday December 21st before two out of conference opponents against the Trinity Trojans and the North Royalton Bears on December 23rd and December 28th. North Ridgeville will finish off the rest of their home stand this Saturday December 21st against the Elyria Pioneers before closing out the year on the road against the Columbia Raiders on December 30th.
