Avon advances to state championship with 38-7 win over Walsh Jesuit

Akron, Ohio – The Avon Eagles advanced to their second consecutive state championship with a 38-7 victory over Walsh Jesuit in the OHSAA Division II state semifinals at Infocision Stadium.

Walsh Jesuit won the toss and elected to receive to open up Friday night’s game. They got things started with a 96 yard kickoff return from senior and University of Miami commit Milan Parris.

The Warriors also came up with a fumble recovery two plays later thanks to a fumble recovery from Drew Wollschleger. However, the Warriors were forced to punt on their next possession.

Thanks to a Blake Elder to Fin Jerdonek reception, the Eagles found themselves in the red zone. A couple of plays later, senior tailback Cam Wendell found the end zone from a yard out. The ensuing PAT was successful, knotting the score at 7.

Walsh Jesuit looked to take the lead on their next drive. David Ternosky found Milan Parris for a big gain to put the Warriors in Avon territory. A few plays later, the Avon defense came up with a big play, as senior Caden Clapham came up with an interception off a tipped pass, returning it 96 yards to the end zone. The Eagles took the lead, 14-7, early in the second quarter.

It would not be the last interception of the quarter, though.

Senior Sammy Ulery picked off another David Ternosky pass and returned it deep into Warrior territory. This time, Avon had to settle for a field goal off the leg of Jensen Petro from 25 yards out, padding their lead to 17-7.

Avon came up with a big stop on defense, getting the ball back on downs late in the first half. This time, the Eagles were able to get six as Blake Elder found Killian Haessig for a 19 yard touchdown reception. The ensuing point after was no good, and Avon led 23-7 at the break.

In the third quarter, Avon increased their lead as Blake Elder found Grant Barr for a 30 yard touchdown toss. The ensuing two-point try was no good, but the Eagles led 29-7.

After another stop on defense, Elder tossed his third touchdown of the game, this time to Fin Jerdonek from 28 yards out. Avon attempted another two point try, and it was unsuccessful, keeping the Eagle lead at 35-7.

Toledo commit Grant Blascak came up with an interception for Walsh Jesuit in the fourth quarter. However, the Avon defense continued to stymie the Walsh Jesuit offense, getting the ball back on downs.

Jensen Petro drilled his second field goal of the game, this time from 35 yards out, increasing the lead to 38-7 and triggering the running clock. This came following an interception from junior Jairel Fenton.

Avon advanced to their second straight championship, and will take on Cincinnati Anderson next Thursday, December 4th.
