Plains, Ohio- The Athens Bulldogs took on the Meigs Marauders in a conference game on October 1, 2021. Athens hosted the Meigs at the Joe Burrow stadium for Athens Homecoming Game.
Many fans packed the stadium in honor of the celebration and to cheer on their beloved Bulldogs. Athens was looking for their second win of the season on this warm fall night.
Athens quarterback, Landon Wheatley, intercepted the ball within a minute in the first quarter. Which set the tone for the Bulldog’s intentions this evening.
The Meigs weren’t going down without a fight, the Marauders took procession of the ball and brought it down the field and Coulter Cleland scored a touchdown, with a good point after. 7-0, Meigs with 4:14 to go in the first quarter.
Athens, Levi Neal, threw a touchdown pass to Wheatley for the Bulldog’s first score of the night, the point after was not good. 7-6, Meigs with 1:25 to go in the first quarter.
The first quarter ended 7-6, Meigs.
With 5:39 to go in the second quarter Athens, Derrick Welsh, intercepted the ball for an 82-yard touchdown run. A two-point conversion pass was also good. This touchdown and the two-point conversion were crucial for the Bulldogs. 14-7, Athens.
The Bulldogs were on fire. Wheatley had a 72-yard touchdown run with 2:36 to go in the second quarter. The point after was good, the score 21-7, Athens.
The Meigs managed to get a touchdown by Cleland with 34 seconds left in the second quarter. The extra point was good making the score, 21-14 Athens.
The Bulldogs were determined to widen the score gap before halftime. With 8 seconds left in the first half, a touchdown pass from Wheatley to Welsh did just that. The extra point was good, 28-14 Athens.

The Meigs closed the gap by scoring a touchdown with a good extra point with 7:51 to go in the third quarter. The score to start the second half, 28-21 Athens.
The Meigs scored a touchdown due to a mistake by the Bulldogs that put the Marauders back in possession of the ball. With 3:52 to go in the third quarter, the score was at an even tie, 28-28.
The Bulldogs didn’t lose their fire, a touchdown pass to Welsh and a good extra point broke the tie making the score 35-28, Athens with 1:20 left in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs were leading 35-28 going into the fourth quarter.
Athens, Luke Brandes, scored a touchdown with a good extra point with 10:15 to go in the fourth quarter. Athens yet again widened the score gap, 42-28.
Athens, Brandes, scored another touchdown and a good extra point resulted in the biggest lead in the game, 49-28 Athens.
The Meigs scrambled to get down the field and they managed to score a touchdown and a good extra point, making the score 49-35 with 39 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.
The final score of the night was 49-35, Athens with a home victory. The Young Bulldogs were missing some of their players in tonight’s game and pulled through with a win. The Bulldogs will be on the road again next week as they take on the Wellston Golden Rockets.
