by BEREA, OH – Points were hard to come by Tuesday night as the Amherst Comets went on the road to snatch a 35-26 victory from the Berea-Midpark Titans. It could have been the cold weather, a look ahead to Christmas break, or just one of those nights, but a lot of shots simply weren’t falling on this night.
Kayla Ferancy led the Comets with 15 while Reagan Braaten led the young Titans with 8. Ava Darmos of Amherst and Lauren Lantow each had 7 while Emma Arnold of Berea-Midpark had 6 and Kristen Kelley of the Comets finished with 5. Also scoring 5 for the Comets was Natalie Pleban.
After a rough first quarter of scoring for both squads that saw the Comets hold the Titans to 0 points, while only scoring 6, things began to heat up a bit in the second quarter. After 2 plus minutes went by into the second, the Titans finally broke the scoring seal with a Regan Braaten three pointer, that cut the Comet lead to 8-3 and gave Berea-Midpark their first bit of life. Ferancy wasted no time getting two of those points right back for the Comets.
From there, the Comets took the air out of the ball for a bit, and without the pressure of the Titans, time began to melt away off the clock. With 1:55 to play in the second quarter, it was still just 12-3 as neither team could seem to score. Pleban got it going for the Comets at that point, as she nailed a 10 footer from the left of the hoop to extend the lead to 14-3. From there, Lauren Lantow of the Titans hit a three from the corner to knock it back down to 14-6 before a Ferancy bucket seconds later put the Titans back up by double digits. A Ferancy foul shot gave the Comets a 17-6 lead at the break.
A back and forth third quarter only saw the Comets extend their lead by one, as they took a 28-16 lead into the fourth when things began to get interesting. Another Ferancy bucket made it 30-16 with 6:08 to go in the game, as the Titans faced their largest deficit of the night.
From there, something finally sparked the Titans and the began to make a move with a bucket. With 3:33 to go, Emma Arnold nailed a three ball, and suddenly the Titans only trailed 30-21. A few moments later, a 5-0 run by the Titans sliced it down to 32-26 with 1:36 to go, and it looked like we may see a miracle comeback. It was not to be for the Titans however, as the Comets held on for the 35-26 victory.
