Amherst – With the SWC wide open this season, the dynamic duo of Kristen Kelley and Kayla Ferancy of Amherst are looking to put everyone on notice.  Tonight, in a dominant 69-41 victory for the Comets over the Twinsburg Tigers, Ferancy had 25 points while Kelley had 24.  Both of them looked unstoppable every time they touched the ball.

As for Twinsburg, despite the 28 point defeat, this squad showed massive heart all game long.  They aren’t the biggest team by any stretch, with most on the roster below 5’7, the play with heart and hustle all game, working hard for every loose ball and driving the lane without fear.

Tonight for the Tigers, they were led by Taylor Dee with 9 while Kayla Cellura had 8.  Kayla wasn’t the only Cellura to score, as Alexis Cellura put in 6.  Also with 6 for the Tigers was Abby Carroll while Tamia Andrews had 5.  McKayla Hardwich, Taylor Wilson and Mackenzie had 2 each while Genesis Carthon had 1.

The game was tight in its earliest moments tied up at 5 with 5 minutes to go in the first.  Both teams playing tight defense, but also moving the ball well on offense and attacking the lane.  This aggressive nature for the Comets led to multiple trips to the foul line, they converted 5 from the line, and Ferancy led all first quarter scorers with 7 as did Taylor Dye of the Tigers with 7.  Jocelyn George hit a shot from the key at the buzzer to give Amherst a 13-9 lead after an entertaining first quarter.

Kristen Kelley scored 4 points in the early moments of the second quarter as they utilized her well off the inbound pass.  One time she ran a perfect route to the ball as she caught and nailed a shot from the elbow to put the Comets up 19-11 at the time.  A moment later she attacked the paint again to make it 21-13 with 4:34 to go in the half. A few moments later it was Kayla Ferancy on a fast break to stretch the lead to double digits at 23-13.

The physical play would continue but not without whistles, as Amherst ended up in the bonus with over half the quarter to play, with every foul sending the Tigers to the line. Twinsburg really couldn’t take advantage however and trailed the Comets 30-19 at the break.  Kelley put up 11 in the quarter to complete an impressive 15-point first quarter.

Both Kelley and Ferancy started the second half red hot, Kayla sandwiched two three balls around 5 Kirsten Kelley points to extend the lead to 41-25 midway through the quarter.  Good ball movement and smart shot selection along with solid defense continued to create great opportunities for the Comets. Amherst would run the lead out to 47-27 at one point in the third quarter as they continued to attack.

Before the quarter was over, Jocelyn George nailed two three balls from directly in front of the Comet bench to give them a commanding 53 – 32 lead after three.

The Comets went on to unload from there with a 16-point fourth quarter to secure the 69-41 victory.  Amherst plays again this Wednesday night as they host Elyria in an effort to move to 3-0.

For the Comets, Kelley had 24 while Ferancy had 25.  Natalie Pleban buried two big shots in the fourth to finish with 6 points total while Jocelyn George finished with 8.  Bradyn Silvasy continue to look sharp and move the ball well with 6 more points tonight.  Jayla Cruz and Peyton Roberts also continued to play tough defense as well and create turnovers.

  1. This team has a talent, I’m not sure how I can gauge how good they are being 2-0. Last year I believe they started off the same and lost 8 of 9. Let’s get into the SWC and see how we play. These wins are great for confidence but let’s beat the
Falls and Midview this year then we can get excited.Expectations are high and coaching will be a key in victories this year in the SWC. We saw how we did last year night in and night out. Let’s go Lady Comets ☄️
