CLEVELAND, OH – Cleveland native Amarion Dickerson kept 15th Seeded Robert Morris close with 25 points and 9 rebounds, but wasn’t enough to pull off the upset as the Alabama Crimson Tide weathered several storms to capture the 90-81 victory. Robert Morris had a tremendous second half rally to capture their only lead of the game, but it would last all but 30 seconds. Alabama led the other 39:30 of this one.
The Crimson Tide were led by Mark Sears with 22 points while Clifford Omoruyo cashed in with 17 points of his own. Also scoring for Alambama was Mouhamed Dioubate with 18 while Derrion Reed had 9. As mentioned, the Colonials were led by Dickerson but also saw a considerable contribution from Alvaro Folgueiras with 15.
Alabama jumped out to a quick 10-point lead at 14-4 just 6 minutes into the game. The Colonials answered with 7 straight points to cut it to 14-11 before Holloway stopped the run with a three ball for the Crimson Tide. From there they ran it out to 19-10 before a crash landing from Jarin Stevenson of Alabama halted play.
Down 28-18, the Colonials needed a spark and got a quick three ball from Ismael Piet to cut into the Crimson Tide advantage. This was followed by Alvaro Folgueiras who put in a layup, and just like that they cut the lead in half at 28-23 with 6:47 to play in the opening half. They got it as close as 32-29 at one point in the first half. Later in the half Alabama was starting to pull away again when Dickerson drained a long three ball to cut it back to 39-36. The game went to half with the Crimson Tide up 40-36.
The Crimson Tide looked strong coming out of the break and proceeded to run the lead back out to 10 at 56-46 with 12:39 to play. The Cleveland sensation Dickerson led Robert Morris right back with six straight points to cut it to 56-52. They even cut it to two points at 58-56 with 9:45 to play in the game.
Down four with 7:44 to play, it was Dickerson again pounding the lane and scoring while getting fouled. A proceeding foul shot cut it to 64-63 as Dickerson was on a mission. Seconds later, a drive by Josh Omojafo gave them their first lead of the game at 65-64. The Crimson Tide answered for six straight to go back out on top 70-65. Eventually, Alabama pulled away for good to take home the 90-81 as the Colonial upset bid ran out of gas.
