Akron Zips
MAC East
Coach: Joe Moorhead first year with team
Last years record: 2-10
The overcast
The Akron Zips had a tough year last year with only one conference win. Akron has an estimated 51 returners with the addition of a few big transfers. WR Shocky Jacques-Louis from Pitt, WR Alex Adams from LSU, and WR Daniel George from Penn State are some of the big-time transfers that will compliment JR QB DJ Irons. The Zips have failed to average over 20 points a game in the past 4 seasons “to win games you have to score points, we need to be explosive, protect the football, and put it in the endzone” said Coach Moorhead at the MAC media day. The offense is set for big improvements while the defense is hoping to be a little be stronger this season. Akron gave up 250 rushing yards a game last season “if you can’t stop the run it’s going to be a long day in the stadium” said coach Moorhead. Akron has added some size to the d-line this year through the transfer portal as they transition to a 4 down lineman set. Having 4 down lineman should help the zips be stouter against the run.
Dom’s overlook
Akron is projected to finish last in the MAC East during the media day but don’t let that fool you. With a large number of returners from last season as well as the addition of key transfers, Akron could make some noise in the MAC this season. Coach Moorhead is often credited for Penn States offense in 2016 that led the Blue and White to a Big Ten championship. Last year Oregon was credited with have a creative offense, one that was able to dice up Ohio State early last season. Look for huge improvements by the Zips offense while the Defense may need a little longer to adjust.
2022 prediction
Akron will take a step forward with a strong passing attack. DJ Irons is going to have a career year with Shocky Jacques-Louis as his number one option. The young running back Cam Wiley will be a big point of emphasis for Moorhead’s offense as they look to build the O-line in front of him. The defense will take steps in the right direction, but it is hard to predict how big of a step they will take. Four wins looks to be the likely outcome for the Zips this season. If things go better than expected they could be in position to be bowl eligible.
