AEW Dynamite Grand Slam Provides Plenty Of Shocks!

This recap is brought to you by – https://keeonsports.com/sponsors/

AEW Dynamite Grand Slam took place tonight in front of a raucous crowd at Arthus Ashe Stadium.  It was a card loaded with title matches and grudges match, and AEW often threats this yearly show with a PPV feel to it.

The night started off with a bit of a upset as perennial loser Eddie Kingston, actually tasted gold for his first in AEW/ROH.  The ROH World Championship victory came over dominant champion Claudio Castagnoli in a result few saw coming.

The win wasn’t even the only giant upset of the night as Ray Fenix stunned Jon Moxley for the International Championship as well.  This one seems very odd to me as AEW just scripted The BCC to lose two titles in one night, and Moxley wasn’t even champion a month after headlining a PPV to win it.

Honestly, this one makes no sense other than they were desperate for a headliner in the PPV last month, and badly needed Moxley to go over. If anything, they should have had Orange Cassidy retain, and drop it to Fenix tonight. Regardless, the BCC are now titleless to close the night.

It wasn’t exactly Mankind visiting Mr. McMahon in the hospital, but the scene of Adam Cole visiting Roddy Strong provided a few chuckles as Cole left early to head to Dynamite to cheer on MJF.

Christian Cage challenged Darby Allin to face him and Luchasaurus in a Triple Threat Match for the TNT Title on Collision.  This is an odd twist as well, as common logic would see this as the way to officially move the strap to Cage after a win, however, what will Luchasaurus have to say about it?

This wasn’t the only twist of the night, as Sammy Guevara turned on Chris Jericho after losing to his mentor.  The turn was set up in the exact same way Jericho did it to Shawn Michaels after their famous WWE WrestleMania 19 match. It was flawless, and for the fourth time in his AEW run, Guevara is now once again, a full fledged heel.  Fans want to cheer him, but he is now booked with Don Callis as a security blanket by AEW to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Saraya defeated Toni Storm to retain the AEW Women’s Title and no one cares. Putting the strap on Saraya for a cheap Webley Stadium pop to honor her train wreck family was a terrible idea.

MJF came out decked in NY Met’s colors from head to toe, as the fan base was squarely behind him.  The long-awaited Adam Cole turning against MJF didn’t happen, despite this being the perfect venue to draw the most heat for it, being MJF’s hometown, it still didn’t occur as MJF submitted Joe to close the night while Cole celebrated in the ring with him as perhaps the biggest shock of the night, was the turn that didn’t happen.
