Derek Carr shocked the New Orleans Saints earlier today by announcing his sudden retirement from the NFL. He had been the Saints starting quarterback for two seasons and in the NFL for 11, mainly with the Oakland and then Las Vegas Raiders. The retirement coming after the diagnosis of another should injury that would have required major surgery and caused him to miss the entire upcoming season.
Because of this and the fact that the Saints selected Tyler Shough with the 40th overall pick in this year’s draft, he is not leaving them in a huge lurch, but few if anyone believes he is the answer. This leaves them with the option of trading for Kirk Cousins from Atlanta who will demand a first round pick, or with Cleveland for Deshaun Watson, who at this point, may be willing to let him go for next to nothing if the Saints agree to take on the remainder of his contract.
Time will tell….
