While there is no question that a healthy Deshaun Watson is at the top of the Cleveland Browns QB depth chart to stay, there is a bit of a question with the rest of the room and how it will all shake out this summer. A lot of fans think it is a “given” that Jameis Winston is a sure thing at backup quarterback given his history of doing it, and quality numbers as a starter, but not so fast.
Conventional thinking would say that Winston is a lock as the second quarterback on the depth chart. In his brief four year New Orleans stint trying to revive his career as a backup and spot starter, Winston tossed a modest 20 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in 21 games.
Those are not exactly hall of fame stats, but worthy of a serviceable backup quarterback if the team has a good enough defense and strong enough running game. Let’s face it, Joe Flacco is gone and not coming back, so if Watson is an epic bust for a third straight season, the Browns desperately need someone who can step in and possibly save the season, (again).
With that being said, there is no guarantee that the spot is being handed to Winston, given his erratic nature. This includes his last play as a Saint to close out last season when he waived off the last second knee as New Orleans led 41-17 in the closing seconds of a pointless game, instead Winston decided to score one more time. A decision that started a near fight between coaches afterwards.
Now, with all that being said, if not Winston, then who? Well, let’s turn to page two and take a look at the player or players chasing him for that spot.
