UFC Fight Night 280 Fiziev vs. Torres Takeaways

Venue – the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan

This event marked the promotion’s second visit to Baku and first since UFC on ABC: Hill vs. Rountree Jr. in June 2025. It was also the first event after the promotion signed a multi-year cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Baku City Circuit (BCC) Operations Company that will see Fight Night events being held annually in the city until 2028.

Takeaway – It was different for sure, almost felt like an underground promotion at times because of the poor lighting in the venue. Still a cool looking place to watch a fight.

Time of day – 9am in the states

Takeaway – It was an early start time, no one can deny that, but, it wrapped up in enough time for fans to leave for Saturday night BBQ’s or even stay home and watch the TNA PPV instead.

A dictionary is sometimes needed for the roster at events in Azerbaikan

Takeaway – Not exactly a roster of names that will roll off anyone’s tongue for this one.  This included such literary gems as

Rafael Fiziev

Sharabutdin Magomedov

Nazim Sadykhov

Asu Almabayev

Ikram Aliskerov

Abusupiyan Magomedov

Abdul-Rakhman Yakhyaev

Nursulton Ruziboev

Bekzat Almakhan

Middleweight Ikram Aliskerov def. Brunno Ferreira Decision (unanimous) (30–27, 30–27, 30–27) 3 5:00
Middleweight Abusupiyan Magomedov def. Michał Oleksiejczuk Submission (guillotine choke) 1 3:25

Main Card takeaway – Rafael Fiziec looked absolutely incredible in the main event and ran through Manuel Torres like a hot knife though butter,. In fact, his spinning wheel kick was the KOS KO of the night.

Sharabutdin Magomedov may have won, but he looked awful doing so. Most pundits including myself, had him winning by finish in the first, instead what we got was a sloppy, slow and uninspired Magomedov that almost lost a narrow decision as he just never looked like himself.

Michal Oleksiejczuk used to be a contender but those days are long gone now.  After this lost loss to Abusupiyan Magomedov in just 3:25 byt guillotine choke, his career looks to be over.  He has now lost 4 of his last 7 and 5 of his last 8.  The former heavyweight championship challenger looks to be about done.
