UFC 332: SILVA vs. WANG: A New Champion Emerges, A Challenger Becomes Clear and a Legend Retires

Two things became crystal clear following UFC 332, Natalia Silva will not be seen as a paper champion in the UFC Women’s Flyweight Division.  She dominated Wang Cong for five solid rounds tonight to win an easy decision and the belt.  She will eventually have to defend against former champ Valentina Shevchenko who forfeited the title but has already been rumored to get the first match with the winner.   Silva was quicker to strike all night and Wang had no answers.

For Silva, this is now her 14th win in a row and keeps her undefeated in the UFC at 9-0.  She is the real deal and given the chance, she can prove it against Shevchenko down the line.  If the injury to the former champ is more serious then we think, then I’d expect her first title defense will be against Erin Blanchfield if she can get past Jasmine Jasudavicious in a few weeks.

Elsewhere on the card, a serious contender emerged in Peyton Talbott.  He demolished Deiveson Figueiredo in a little over two minutes and wasted no time spotlighting his immense skills. Talbott has now won 3 straight and moved his overall record to 12-1.  He easily had the performance of the night. I’d look for Talbott to shake up the UFC Bantamweight title picture very soon.

In sad news, the colorful career of UFC The Ultimate Fighter Season 11 Winner Court McGhee cane to a bitter end tonight.  He lost his fight to Eric Nolan via third round KO.  McGhee, who reached UFC superstardom by winning the hit reality show in June of 2010 never quite reached a higher peak.  His career wraps up at 22-15, a loser of three straight, five of his last seven, and despite appearing in 25 UFC’s, he never once main evented or competed for a World Championship.

The card took some heat as many criticized it for all the changes it had to make last second, but in the end, it was a great one.  11 of the 14 fights ended in decisive finishes and of those 11,  9 of them came in the first round, it was a great card!
