Rumors have been swirling all week but it is now confirmed, Hungry Howie’s Pizza in Westlake has closed for good.
Some say it was due to the rising cost of gasoline causing them to pay their drivers more. Others state it is simply the reality of the harsh economic time we are living in.
According to experts on the matter, they listed these are the top possible reasons for closure.
- Rising Costs & Compressed Margins: Increasing expenses for labor, rent, and core ingredients (like cheese and flour) squeeze net profit margins, especially when chains fail to adjust prices or control fixed overhead.
- Third-Party Delivery Commissions: Heavy reliance on external platforms like DoorDash or UberEats eats into profits, as commission fees typically range from 20% to 35% per order.
- Intense Competition & Menu Stagnation: Pizza brands face intense competition from fast-casual alternatives, local indie pizzerias with superior ingredients, and other quick-service segments (like chicken-focused chains) that offer more perceived value or novelty.
- Mismanaged or Hurried Expansion: Opening too many franchise units too fast—without sufficient startup capital, local demographic research, or a strong financial backbone—frequently leads to crippling debt and closures (seen in major franchise bankruptcies like NPC International or EYM Group for Pizza Hut).
- Declining Food Quality & Brand Confusion: Over-standardizing recipes, relying heavily on artificial additives or frozen dough to chase speed metrics, or rolling out misguided gourmet/gimmick menus alienates loyal customers.
- Digital & Loyalty Lags: Falling behind rivals in mobile app performance, ordering friction, or rewards program value causes major legacy brands to bleed market share to tech-forward competitors like Domino’s
Odd times for sure….
