The Buffalo Bulls used a strong defensive effort along with timely big plays to defeats the Toledo Rockets 23-8 and spoil their homecoming night. The Bull defense held the Rocket attack to just 8 points and just 308 total yards.
The game started off extremely slow as the Bulls put together two long drives in the first quarter of 12 plays each. They turned both drives into points on the leg of Oliver Hautanen of 24 and 29 yards to build a 6-0 lead after one.
As Toledo continued to be shut out in the second quarter, the Bulls didn’t have much better luck until Jason Wright rushed for a 3 yard touchdown with a little under two minutes to play in the first half. This burst along with a strong defensive effort allowed the Bulls to take a 13-0 lead into the break.
After the Bulls tacked on another field goal from Hautanen, they were able to take a 16-0 lead into the fourth quarter. It remained that way until Connor Walendzak rushed for a 1 yard touchdown with 4:39 to play. Toledo then converted the two point conversion and just like that, after being left for dead all game, was suddenly involved with a one score game and a chance.
The Rocket chance would disappear quickly however as Messiah Burch needed just one play to break a 87 yard touchdown run and put the game away for good.
