On a chilly late-September evening, the Shoremen traveled to Elyria looking to continue their recent surge after winning their previous two games. They did exactly that, dominating from the opening possession and cruising to a 37-0 shutout over the Pioneers.
Coach Matt Kostelnik’s Shoremen entered the matchup at 2-3 overall and 2-0 in Southwestern Conference play, while Coach Matt Wilson’s Pioneers came in at 0-5 and 0-2 in the SWC. From the opening kickoff, Avon Lake controlled the game on both sides of the ball and quickly turned the matchup into a one-sided affair.
Running back John Donahue wasted no time putting the Shoremen on the scoreboard. On his first carry of the night, Donahue broke free for a 58-yard touchdown, immediately giving Avon Lake a 7-0 lead.
The Shoremen’s offense continued its assault on the next possession. Quarterback Michael Ambrose moved the ball through the air before finding wide receiver Jacob Perry for a 9-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 14-0.
Elyria never had an opportunity to settle into the game. On the ensuing kickoff, the Shoremen forced a fumble and quickly capitalized. Donahue took advantage of the short field and scored his second touchdown of the night on an 8-yard run.
By the end of the first quarter, Avon Lake had already built a 21-0 advantage.
The Shoremen continued to control field position in the second quarter, repeatedly starting drives in Elyria territory. Their defense made sure the Pioneers had little opportunity to flip the field, while the special teams unit played a major role as well.
Avon Lake blocked two Elyria punts, both of which came while the Pioneers were in their own territory. Those plays repeatedly gave the Shoremen favorable field position and allowed the offense to stay on the attack.
The defense added to the damage when the Shoremen recorded a safety, further extending their lead.
Donahue then struck again. Starting at the Elyria 30-yard line, Avon Lake needed only a short drive before Donahue broke through for an 11-yard touchdown, completing his third scoring run of the night.
The Shoremen weren’t finished.
Facing fourth-and-10, Avon Lake took a gamble and went for it. The decision paid off when Ambrose connected with wide receiver Mason Ambrose for a 20-yard touchdown, pushing the score to 37-0.
By halftime, the game had effectively been decided.
Avon Lake’s defense completely suffocated the Pioneers, holding Elyria to just 36 total yards in the first half. The Shoremen recorded two sacks and four pressures before halftime, consistently disrupting Elyria quarterback Zach Fury and preventing the Pioneers from establishing any offensive rhythm.
The defensive performance continued a strong stretch for Avon Lake, which had played exceptionally well on that side of the ball over its previous three games. The Shoremen’s ability to create pressure, win on early downs and force Elyria into difficult situations kept the Pioneers from moving the football.
Avon Lake’s rushing attack was equally dominant. The Shoremen repeatedly found running lanes and controlled the line of scrimmage, allowing them to build their lead while keeping the clock moving.
The third quarter brought another defensive highlight when Avon Lake defensive back Carson Brown intercepted a pass, adding another takeaway to an already dominant night.
With the game firmly in hand, the Shoremen continued to control the clock and protect their shutout in the fourth quarter.
Donahue finished as the game’s biggest offensive weapon, rushing nine times for 94 yards and three touchdowns. His three rushing scores came from 58, 8 and 11 yards, giving Avon Lake explosive plays every time he found space.
Perry also made an impact through the air with his 9-yard touchdown reception, while Ambrose connected with Mason Ambrose for the 20-yard touchdown on fourth down.
The Shoremen’s combination of explosive rushing, timely passing, dominant defense and strong special teams play made the difference from the opening minutes. Elyria struggled to generate anything offensively, while Avon Lake consistently turned favorable field position into points.
The 37-0 victory improved Avon Lake to 3-3 overall and 3-0 in Southwestern Conference play, extending its winning streak to three games. Elyria fell to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

For Avon Lake, John Donahue earned Player of the Game honors after rushing nine times for 94 yards and three touchdowns.
For Elyria, RJ Williams was named Player of the Game after recording seven receptions for 44 yards.
