The Wickliffe Blue Devils defeat the Independence Blue Devils 39-22 to remain undefeated

Wickliffe answered on its first possession by leaning on its ground game. Running back Nick Oboczky had several strong runs to move the Blue Devils into Independence territory. However, a holding penalty pushed the Blue Devils back 10 yards and shortly stalled their momentum. Facing a fourth-and-short situation, Oboczky broke through the defense for a 43-yard touchdown run, swinging the momentum back in Wickliffe’s favor. The point-after attempt was unsuccessful due to a mishandled snap, allowing Independence to maintain a 7-6 lead.

Looking to build on its early success, Independence once again turned to its running game on their next drive. However, a false start penalty put the Blue Devils behind the chains, and the possession came to an abrupt end when Wickliffe defensive back Xavier Wells intercepted a deep pass attempt from Avila. Wickliffe wasted little time capitalizing on the turnover. On just a few plays later, running back Cole Vanatta broke through the defense for a 61-yard touchdown run, giving them their first lead of the night. The touchdown put the Blue Devils ahead 13-7 early in the second quarter and shifted momentum in their favor.

Independence was unable to generate much offense on their next possession. The drive stalled after defensive lineman Sam Parker recorded a sack, forcing them to punt the ball back to Wickliffe. Wickliffe quickly took advantage of the opportunity. A facemask penalty against Independence gave the Blue Devils favorable field position near midfield, and consecutive runs from Nick Oboczky and Cole Vanatta helped march the offense into the red zone. Oboczky then capped off the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run, his second touchdown of the night, extending Wickliffe’s lead to 20-7 with less than four minutes remaining in the first half.

On Independence’s final drive of the first half, running back Maverick Durden provided a spark with an 18-yard catch-and-run that moved the Blue Devils into Wickliffe territory. However, the drive struggled to gain further momentum. A delay of game penalty pushed Independence back five yards, though a subsequent encroachment penalty against Wickliffe returned those yards and set up a manageable fourth-and-short situation. Looking to keep the drive alive, the Blue Devils elected to run the ball on fourth down, but the Wickliffe defense came up with a stop short of the line to gain. The turnover on downs brought the first half to a close with Wickliffe holding a 20-7 lead.

Wickliffe needed little time to make an impact on their opening possession of the second half. On the Blue Devils’ second offensive play, running back Cole Vanatta broke free for a 60-yard touchdown run, extending Wickliffe’s lead to 26-7. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, but they maintained firm control early in the third quarter. Independence looked to respond on its next drive and received a spark from Levi Sears, who ripped off a 31-yard run to move the Blue Devils into Wickliffe territory. However, the drive quickly unraveled as a penalty against Independence and a subsequent sack pushed the offense back near midfield. Unable to recover from the lost yardage, the Blue Devils were forced to punt the ball back to Wickliffe.

Before he could do so, however, an Independence player recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. The score cut Wickliffe’s lead to 26-14 and provided Independence with a much-needed spark of momentum midway through the second half.

Wickliffe’s next possession began with a methodical drive into Independence territory, fueled by several strong runs from Nick Oboczky. The Blue Devils appeared to be building momentum before a fumble briefly put the drive in jeopardy. Fortunately for Wickliffe, they were able to recover the loose ball, though the mishap left them facing a third-and-long situation. That challenge proved to be no problem for Cole Vanatta, who continued his dominant night by breaking loose for a 44-yard touchdown run. The explosive scoring play extended Wickliffe’s lead to 32-14 and further cemented the Blue Devils’ control of the game. The ensuing point-after attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 32-14 to take us into the fourth quarter.

Independence responded with one of its best drives of the second half, leaning heavily on Maverick Durden. The drive was set up by a 27-yard reception from wide receiver Bobby Jackson, which moved the Blue Devils deep into Wickliffe territory. Durden then took over, powering through the defense on a series of strong runs to move Independence inside the red zone. He finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run, and the Blue Devils successfully converted the two-point attempt to trim the deficit to 32-22. Wickliffe’s ensuing possession initially appeared to be short-lived, as the Blue Devils were forced into a punting situation. However, a roughing-the-kicker penalty against Independence gave Wickliffe an automatic first down and breathed new life into the drive. Taking advantage of the second chance, Nick Oboczky powered the offense down the field with several physical runs that moved the Blue Devils deep into the red zone. Oboczky then capped off the possession with a 3-yard touchdown run, his third rushing touchdown of the game, extending Wickliffe’s lead to 39-22 and that sealed the game.

Independence was led by QB Matthew Avila who went 9/14 passing, 106 yards and 1 passing touchdown, RB Maverick Durden had 20 carries for 62 yards, 2 receptions for 19 yards and 1 rushing touchdown, WR’s Dominic DiGeronimo with 1 reception for 23 yards, Shane Korinek with 1 reception for 17 yards, Bobby Jackson with 1 reception for 27 yards, and TE Levi Sears with 4 carries for 30 yards and 3 receptions for 23 yards and 1 touchdown
