Dominant Run Game Powers Brecksville Over Barberton

Barberton, OH: The Brecksville Bees (2-2) rushed for over 200 yards en route to a 25-12 victory over the Barberton Magics (2-2). Senior running back Tut Matchittom had a big night for the Bees, rushing for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. He wasn’t the only Bee to put up a big rushing game, as Tyler Soeder added 53 yards and a touchdown of his own. For Barberton, Cleophus Thompson hauled in six catches for 81 yards and a touchdown.

First Half

Brecksville received the opening kickoff and promptly marched down the field, including a 17-yard completion by Alex Henegar. The Bees would get inside the red zone before turning it over on downs. Barberton could not capitalize on the stop, quickly going three-and-out.

The Bees would cross midfield again on their next possession, but two five-yard penalties and a sack backed them into their own territory and forced a punt. It appeared as if the Barberton offense was finding a bit of momentum, working their way down to the Brecksville 31. Facing a fourth and four, the Bees forced an incomplete pass to halt the drive.

Neither side could find any success on their next possession, both going three-and-out and punting the ball away. Starting their next drive at their own 39, Brecksville pounded rock, wearing down the Magics’ defensive line. Facing third and goal from the one, Tyler Soeder plowed into the end zone for a Bees’ touchdown. The two-point try was not successful, giving Brecksville a 6-0 lead with three minutes remaining in the second.

On Barberton’s first play from scrimmage, the Bees forced a turnover and gave their offense great field position near midfield. A big completion from Henegar to Bryndan Williams put the ball at the 20, and Tut Matchittom took the handoff into the end zone for another Brecksville touchdown. This time the extra point try was successful, extending the lead to 13-0.

The Magics started their next drive with a nine-yard completion from Jackson Hanlin to Cleophus Thompson on a bubble screen. Barberton ran the same play again and Thompson broke free, sprinting down the field for a 71-yard touchdown. The extra point try was no good, drawing the Magics closer at 13-6.

Brecksville would get one more possession, but the first half clock ran out. When the halftime whistle sounded, Brecksville held a 13-6 lead.

Second Half

Barberton received the second half kickoff but could not get the offense going, immediately punting the ball away following a three-and-out. Starting on their own 39, Brecksville ran the ball seven straight times, including six carries by Matchittom who scored from 26 yards out to make it 19-6 Bees after a failed extra point.

Late in the third quarter, Bryndan Williams jumped in front of a Hanlin pass and picked it off, rumbling 27 yards to the end zone for another Brecksville touchdown. The extra point failed again, putting the Bees up 25-6.

With their backs against the wall, Barberton put together their most impressive drive of the night. Starting at their own 35, the Magics got a big completion from Hanlin to Marianno Daugherty for 47 yards. Three plays later, Hanlin connected with a player not listed on the roster for a 15-yard touchdown. After another missed extra point, Brecksville led 25-12.

Barberton immediately forced a fumble, recovering the ball at the Bees’ 27. Unfortunately for the Magics, they immediately turned the ball over themselves on an interception. Brecksville ran over five minutes off of the game clock, but were still forced to punt.

Needing a touchdown to stay in the game, the Barberton offense came out flat, going four-and-out. The Bees would take over on the Magics’ 20 with almost four minutes remaining. Brecksville would get inside the ten but let the clock run out, sealing a 25-12 win over Barberton in their Suburban League opener.

Next Week

Barberton will look to get back into the win column next Friday night when they travel to Mayfield (4-0). The Wildcats stayed unbeaten with a 40-0 shutout of Aurora.

The Bees will try to stay unbeaten in Suburban League play when they host Kenston (2-2) Friday night. The Bombers broke a two-game losing streak with a thrilling 45-42 victory over Copley.
