Early Game
The game started off with opposite directions for the two teams. Chiles began the game with a drive that sputtered out after six total plays and ended with punting back to the Seminoles. Florida High took a mere four plays to march seventy-six yards and ended with a connection between quarterback Brisyn Brown and touted 4-star wideout Ar’Tavian “Bubba” Brown for a 22-yard score.
After this, Chiles essentially repeated exactly what their first drive looked like – six plays, one first down and a punt back to Florida High. However, only two plays into their next drive, the Seminoles came across their first of their game-total three drive-ending fumbles when Wolfpack defensive back Reece Hull recovered the ball on Chiles’ 31-yard line.
Despite a first-down false start putting them in a 1st & 15 scenario, Chiles managed a 4th-down conversion with running back Markus Lundy barreling for a 2-yard gain to keep the drive alive. However, the drive would stall out and conclude with a 38-yard field goal attempt missing wide.
Florida High’s response was as quick as their first drive with two explosive plays within the 3-play drive. One being a 35-yard gain from a downfield pass from Brisyn Brown to A.J. Johnson and the second being a screen pass from Brisyn Brown to Bubba Brown for a 41-yard score. Both players garnered their second touchdown of the game and Florida High looked incredibly strong.
Mid-Game
At this point, all momentum was in favor of the Seminoles – the crowd was quiet, hopes were low, and when the next drive for the Wolfpack once again ended in a punt, all hope seemed to be lost. This was especially so after Florida High escaped being pinned back on their own 5-yard line off of a well-placed punt from Chiles punter Walker Bulloch and excellent punt return coverage. The Noles’ offense was continuing to churn as it had all game, however, Chiles’ defense forced its second turnover of the game. Wolfpack linebacker Mason McCants punched the ball out and fellow linebacker Bo Pearson picked up the loose ball for a 40-yard scoop-n’-score to give Chiles a spark of life as the second quarter began to wane.
The Noles were once again plagued by the turnover bug on their next drive. Right after Seminoles running back Mike Jones converted on a crucial third down, the Chiles defense would pick up a six-yard sack – coming from linebacker Wyatt Jessee and defensive lineman Sam Farmer. And on the very next play, defensive back Nolan Williams would pick off a pass and take it 29 yards back to the house for the second Wolfpack touchdown of the game. With a Hagen Perdue extra point, the game was drawn up at 14.
But the relentless defensive effort didn’t stop. Right after a squib kick recovery by the Seminoles, on the first play of their ensuing possession, the Noles coughed up their third fumble of the game. Chiles defensive linemen Brodie O’Neal and Jack Cobb combined for a tackle that forced a fumble that DB Maryan Jordan would recover. Chiles’ defense was displaying such a masterful mid-game takeover.
This, however, is when Florida High’s defense would make their own stand with a fourth-down stop on the Wolfpack offense. Unfortunately for them, Chiles had done an excellent job with time management, leaving the Seminoles with only forty seconds left to score. Chiles’ defense would hold up and send the game into a halftime tie.
The Seminoles would come out of the half with a bang, however when A.J. Johnson took the kick return from his own four, reversed the field twice and posted a 69-yard kick return to put his team near the red zone right out of the gate. This next drive was dominated by running back Mike Jones, who ran the ball four plays in a row for a gain of 26 yards total, getting them to the one. And after a few unsuccessful conversions, the Seminoles were faced with the decision of going for it with less than a yard to go on fourth down. They decided to take the risk and a Brisyn Brown keeper up the middle sealed the drive to put Florida High back into the driver’s seat.
The Seminoles’ dominant, ground-game-driven drive put the Wolfpack back to a 7-point deficit, forcing Chiles’ next drive to be a crucial one. The Seminoles defensive line, however, was ruthless with the first two plays of this drive ending up with the Wolfpack being stranded in a 3rd & 11 situation courtesy of linebacker Skylar Burger and defensive lineman Toby Nortelus. Wolfpack QB Cason Philley then showed off his running ability with a 10-yard scramble to put his team in a situation where another risky decision was seriously on the table. The Wolfpack were on their own 34-yard line but time and momentum were not in their favor, so they decided to go for it. And once again, the quarterback’s legs got the job done as Philley converted with a grueling one-yard run to give the Wolfpack another set of downs.
Late Game
Mason McCants then took over and ran the ball three times to once again get the Wolfpack into another 4th & 1 situation. And once more, Chiles converted it on a run from running back Markus Lundy, who led the team with 13 carries in the game. Cason Philley ended up converting on another third down with his running ability, but after that, Chiles faced another difficult scenario – a 3rd & 14. Philley found WR Wyatt Jessee for a 12-yard gain, putting the Wolfpack in a situation that at this point was all too familiar – a short fourth down. This time, they weren’t so lucky. Game-high tackle leader Marcus Footman Jr. and his fellow linebacker Jason Harville stopped the run just a half-yard short to put an end to what would end up being the lengthiest drive of the game.
The Noles then led their own lengthy drive with multiple first downs that ended up being very similar to Chiles’ most recent drive. They weren’t faced with a 3rd & 11 where Brisyn Brown ran it himself to make it a 4th & 2, but the Chiles defense matched the Florida High pace and Wyatt Jessee, DB Jamari Thomas and defensive lineman Mason Honeyman gave their offense another shot at tying up the game.
However, the Noles defense ended up being the one with the last laugh, forcing a turnover on downs in just four plays, giving their team the ball back with four minutes left in an attempt to burn as much clock as possible. And that they did. The Noles burned all but fourteen seconds off the clock with a drive that was capped off by a 22-yard field goal from kicker Tucker Campbell. And one last time, the Florida High defense showed up and got their first turnover of the game in the form of defensive back Montrell Holmes coming up with an interception that ended up sealing the game.
