One Half Was All Lakewood Needed: Rangers Blitz John Marshall Behind Wilhelmy, Bolden and Stoll

CLEVELAND, OHIO – The Lakewood Rangers came to John Marshall Field on Saturday afternoon with a plan, and by the time the rain rolled in and called the game early, that plan was already finished. Coach Polo’s group improved to 1-0 with a lopsided, business-like win over John Marshall (0-1), and the final box score barely tells the story of just how in control Lakewood was in the opening 24 minutes. This wasn’t a shootout. It was a clinic in discipline. Lakewood ran 22 plays in the first half — 18 of them on first down. Only four snaps all half came on anything other than first down, a staggering number that speaks to how quickly the Rangers were moving the chains and how little resistance the Lawyers defense could offer.

A Three Headed Monster

The engine behind it all was a trio that looks every bit as dangerous as advertised: sophomore quarterback Otto Wilhelmy, senior running back/linebacker Simmie Bolden, and sophomore two-way standout Lucas Stoll. All three touched the game in winning fashion, and all three will be problems for Cleveland West Conference opponents all season. Lakewood’s first spark came through the air, with

Wilhelmy finding senior tight end Riley Werderber for a big gain. Werderber was a matchup nightmare all afternoon, lining up as an equally dangerous threat split out wide and in-line at tight end. That catch set up the Rangers’ first score, which came on the ground courtesy of Julian Griffin punching it in from short yardage. From there, it turned into an avalanche.

The Onslaught

After Lakewood blocked a John Marshall punt, Wilhelmy needed just one snap to cash in, connecting with senior receiver Tye Taylor to push the lead further. He wasn’t finished. On the ensuing possession, Wilhelmy uncorked a 35-yard strike to Stoll in the back right corner of the end zone — a perfectly placed ball matched with an even better catch — to make it 28-0.Lakewood tacked on one more score just before the half, and shortly after, the rain made the decision for everyone: the game was called early with the Rangers firmly in command.

Defense Flying Around All Night

If the offense was efficient, the defense was suffocating. Lakewood’s front seven swarmed all night, holding John Marshall to a single first down for the entire game — a number that matches Coach Polo’s own postgame emphasis on the group’s effort. Senior defensive tackle Andrew Potoczak anchored the interior, collapsing pockets and clogging running lanes all afternoon, while sophomore defensive lineman Emmett Sample gave Lakewood a disruptive presence up front from snap one. Freshman linebacker Will Fraunfelder flashed serious poise for a first-year player, flying to the ball and cleaning up anything that got past the line. Between the offense’s tempo and the defense’s lockdown effort, John Marshall never found a rhythm on either side of the ball.

Coach Polo: “We Wanted to Start With Purpose”

Postgame, Coach Polo made clear the performance was no accident. “We really like playing these guys,” Polo said of John Marshall. “We wanted to start the season with a purpose and some intent, and we felt like today everything was going right for us. We gave up one first down. The main goal was to get the ball around to all of our receivers, and Otto did a great job at that.”

Kee-On Players of the Game: Otto Wilhelmy & Simmie Bolden

The two Kee-On Sports Players of the Game —Wilhelmy and Bolden — both spoke with the kind of confidence that suggests this Lakewood group believes it’s building toward something bigger. “I think this team can be special,” Wilhelmy told reporters postgame. “We have a lot of skill players who just need the ball in their hands in space, and I think we have a lot of talent.” Bolden, who impacts the game on both sides of the ball, pointed to the group effort behind the performance. “Getting open starts with the offensive line. Next, the coaches who make the right call, and I just do my job” Bolden said. “I’m grateful we got the dub, and we’re onto the next one.”

What’s Next

Both programs turn the page to conference tests next week. John Marshall will host a tough Cleveland West Conference opponent in the (1-0) Rocky River Pirates, looking to bounce back at home. Lakewood, meanwhile, gets a measure-of-revenge opportunity against Rhodes, who beat the Rangers 34-12 at Lakewood Stadium a season ago.
