Replacing talent has become a yearly challenge at Ohio State, and 2026 is no exception. After losing 46 players from last season’s roster, the Buckeyes will need a new group of contributors to emerge if they hope to remain among college football’s top programs.
With opportunities available across the roster, these three returning Buckeyes could be in line for breakout seasons in 2026.
Devin Sanchez, CB
Devin Sanchez enters the 2026 season as one of Ohio State’s most important returning defenders. After carving out a significant role as a true freshman in 2025, Sanchez is expected to be a cornerstone of the Buckeyes’ secondary and could emerge as the team’s top cornerback.
In 13 games last season, Sanchez recorded 12 solo tackles, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery. As the season progressed, he earned increased playing time and continued to gain the trust of Ohio State’s coaching staff.
With Davison Igbinosun and Lorenzo Styles Jr. now in the NFL, Sanchez is poised to take another step forward and become one of the leaders of the Buckeyes’ defense in 2026.
Riley Pettijohn, LB
After spending last season learning behind stars Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles, Riley Pettijohn is expected to take on a larger role in Ohio State’s defense in 2026.
Although his opportunities were limited as a true freshman, Pettijohn made the most of them, recording nine total tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup in five games.
While he is projected to begin fall camp as the third linebacker on the depth chart, Pettijohn has the talent to push for a bigger role as the season approaches.
Zion Grady, DE
Defensive end Zion Grady is another sophomore who could be primed for a larger role in 2026. After earning playing time as a true freshman, Grady enters his second season with an opportunity to become a key contributor along Ohio State’s defensive front.
Grady appeared in 10 games in 2025, recording 13 total tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. However, earning snaps won’t come easy in a talented defensive end room that includes star Kenyatta Jackson Jr., Alabama transfer Qua Russaw and veteran Beau Atkinson.
Despite the competition, Grady’s athleticism and upside make him a strong breakout candidate. Whether he earns a starting role or remains part of the rotation, Grady has the tools to make a significant impact for the Buckeyes’ defense in 2026.
