Pirates Make a Statement: Breaking Down the Biggest Offseason Additions

The Pittsburgh Pirates did not simply “add depth” to their roster this offseason – they made targeted moves. After all these years of constructing a roster through youth and development, this current front office has clearly determined that it is time to support the foundation and compete at a high level today.

The signing of Ryan O’Hearn, Brandon Lowe, and Marcelo Ozuna represents something different. It represents intent.

Let’s analyze.

Ryan O’Hearn – Professional Bat, Needed Stability

Ryan O’Hearn may not be the most exciting signing on the surface, but this is a sound baseball decision.  What he brings to the table:

  • Left-handed power
  • Consistent at-bats
  • First base and corner outfield versatility
  • Tough out against right-handed pitchers

The Pirates have needed a stable, middle-of-the-order hitter who doesn’t chase pitches out of the zone and doesn’t try to do too much. O’Hearn provides professional ABs. He extends the lineup and protects the young players.

He’s not going to be a star – he’s going to get the job done.

And that counts.

Brandon Lowe – True Impact Bat

This is the trade that opened eyes.

Brandon Lowe is a true power bat for the middle infield. He’s a 25-30 home run bat from second base when he’s healthy. That’s hard to find.  What it means:

  • Left-handed power
  • Postseason experience
  • Capable of changing a game with one swing
  • Has good range at second base

The Pirates haven’t had this kind of consistent power at second base in a long time. Lowe provides balance. He provides matchup advantage. And if he can stay healthy, he’s an All-Star caliber player.

This is a trade of the present.

Marcelo Ozuna – The Middle-of-the-Order Anchor

Let’s face it – having Marcell Ozuna in the lineup alters the complexion right away.

This is a proven run producer. A man who can get 90-100 RBIs when he’s on.  Why this matters:

  • Safeguards the young talent
  • Forces opposing pitchers to pitch
  • Gives the Pirates a legitimate DH
  • Brings a veteran presence to the clubhouse

Ozuna is not in Pittsburgh to grow. He is there to hit.  And in a division where you have to score to keep up, that’s important.

What This Means for Pittsburgh

The Pirates are finished with patience.

They have faith in their young players. But now they have built around them with:

  • Professional at-bats
  • Left-handed power
  • Proven run production
  • Postseason experience

That’s how you go from rebuilding to competing.

If these three can stay healthy and perform as they are capable of, this isn’t just an improved Pirates team – it’s a dangerous one.

And for the first time in a while, it feels that way.
