ROCKY RIVER, OH – It was a clash of last years Co CWC Champions as River hosted Westlake in a Saturday matinee hoops showdown.  The Pirates of River came out on top 67-39 after jumping out to a first half lead that was simply too much for the Demons to recover from.

The Pirates were led in scoring by Nora Bruder who was red hot in the first half from downtown and finished the game with 27 points including 15 from long range and 4 from the charity stripe.  Creating a large number of those open shots was Angelina Swallow who finished with 6 points but also 8 assists.

I spoke with Swallow post-game about her ability to run the offense and create open shots for her teammates, “Our team is very good at making the extra pass and making the shots easier for our teammates who work to get open.  I just find them and they make their shots.”

The Pirates shot well all game and saw 13 each from Libby Lang and Olivia Dewey while Claudia Roche had 3.  Finishing with 2 each was Regan Kane and Jane Frolo while Maria Petrulis capped the Pirate scoring with one.

The Pirates will play on Friday night in a fun double header versus rival Bay.  Their game is first and then the boys play after.  I spoke with head coach Jamey Pfahl about the fun of that night coming up, “It is such a great atmosphere and we have a great relationship with our boys team too. “

Leading the way for the Westlake Demons was Ella Stanton with 16, including 9 in the fourth quarter from deep.  Stanton scored in each quarter tonight and sunk 4 from long range.  Husneya Najjar had 7 while Nora Primrose and Anika Feldkircher each finished with 4. Rounding out the Demon scoring was Dina Granem with 3 while Mia Feldkircher had 2.

Bruder started off the game with two three pointers to be answered by one from the Demons Barone, making it 6-3 Pirates early.  Bruder hit two more before the quarter was over as the Pirates took a 14-10 lead into the second.

It was in the second that the Pirates began to pull away.  After the Demons cut it to 14-12, a 9-0 run from Bruder and Swallow increased the Pirate lead to a commanding 23-12 before Stanton halted it briefly with a three pointer.  A 10-2 River run led to a massive 39-19 lead at halftime.

The Pirates ended all doubt to start the second with another 9-4 run to eventually take a 55-23 lead after 3.  It was the River defense that stepped up in that quarter as they held Westlake to only 4 points in the frame.
