The Walsh Jesuit Warriors captured the regional championship with a 35-7 demolition of their rival Archbishop Hoban Knights. Behind another big game from Marty Tobin and an elite defensive effort, the Warriors punched their ticket to the state semifinals.
The Warriors opened the game with a strong drive that took up half of the first quarter clock. It was capped off by a 6-yard touchdown pass from David Ternosky to Milan Parris. Parris, a University of Miami commit, was the Warriors leading receiver with 61 yards on the night.
Through a little bit of trickery, the Knights offense broke through in the second quarter. Wide receiver Payton Cook took a pitch and then delivered a 69-yard strike to John Johnson that got them down to the 2-yard line. Brayton Feister then punched it in to tie the game up 7-7.
Marty Tobin, who racked up 199 yards on the night, gave the Warriors the lead back with a 3-yard TD run in the 2nd quarter. Just before halftime, John Johnson hauled in a 25-yard reception to get the Knights in field goal range. However, the 31-yard try was no good. The Warriors took a 14-7 lead into halftime.
Marty Tobin wasted no time extending that lead. On Walsh’s first offensive play of the 3rd quarter, he broke free for a 71-yard score. The ensuing kickoff was fumbled by Elbert Hill and recovered by Warriors linebacker Emmett Tobin. Hoban’s defense then came through with a 4th and 1 stop to get the ball back.
Unfortunately for Hoban, their offense was stagnant in the second half. After a Hoban punt, Ternosky delivered a 39-yard touchdown pass to Cambell Lann to make it 28-7 Warriors. A touchdown run by Carlos Smith in the 4th quarter put the finishing touch on a 35-7 regional championship victory.
