Walsh Jesuit Warriors Defeat Fitch to Head Towards Showdown With Hoban

Article by Nick Vasko

The Walsh Jesuit Warriors roll over top of the Austintown Fitch Falcons in a 42-21 victory.  Marty Tobin was the star of the show right from the opening kickoff.  On the very first play of the game Tobin broke a tackle and it was off to the races.  82 yards later and 15 seconds into the game he found himself celebrating in the end zone with his teammates.  Austintown Fitch responded by showing a sliver of offense when Deon’Dray Richard broke a 72 yard touchdown run of his own, evening up the score 7-7.  The Falcons wouldn’t sniff the end zone again until late in the game.

Once both teams were able to settle in, Walsh established a methodical drive orchestrated by the coaching staff and executed by the players.  Quarterback Ben Beal finished it off with a 10 yard touchdown run, putting Walsh back on top 14-7.

After that it was all Marty Tobin.  He would go on to pound a TD in from the 1 yard line with 6 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter.  Austintown Fitch and Walsh Jesuit would trade possessions and by the time Walsh got the ball back with about three and a half minutes to go in the half, he was given the rock and scored again.  Then with a minute left Walsh got the ball back but was backed up to the 10 yard line.  Walsh wasn’t necessarily looking to score again but when the offensive line parted Austintown Fitch like the Red Sea and Marty Tobin saw an end zone 90 yards away there was no stopping him.  Tobin scored again to end the half with 14 carries, 214 yards rushing, 3 TD’s, and the 82 yard opening kickoff return for a touchdown.

That would make the score 35-7 halfway through the contest.

The 3rd quarter started out messy for both teams and kept getting worse.  There were almost no penalties in the first two quarters but everyone made up for it in the 3rd.  Walsh made a few mistakes letting their emotions get the best of them and Austintown Fitch certainly did the same.  After sorting all the flags and missteps, Walsh Jesuit still managed to score another touchdown; this time to #4, senior running back Carlos Smith.

The Smith touchdown made the score 42-7 and started a running clock but it was halted with 7 minutes left in the game when Collin Kalaher connected with Brady Evans on a beautiful 39 yard bomb to make the score 42-14.

There would be 1 more touchdown scored by Austintown Fitch in the fourth quarter making the score 42-21, and after a failed onside kick attempt we saw the victory formation from Walsh Jesuit to seal a commanding win.

Marty Tobin only had 1 carry in the second half as he earned some much needed rest since the Warriors of Walsh Jesuit will face off against the number one seeded Knights of Archbishop Hoban next Friday night.  Location TBD.
