LAKEWOOD, OH – The St. Ed’s Eagles converted on 8 of 11 third downs and dominated the line on both sides of the ball in route to a 38-6 win over the visiting Whitmer Panthers. With the win, the Eagles advance to the Regional Championship game in Division 1 Region 1 for the 5th straight season. This year is a rematch of their win last year over Mentor.
They won with a combination of excellent line play, clutch third down conversions and big stops when they needed them the most. The run game was led again by Brandon White who tallied 135 yards on 16 carries with touchdown runs of 44 and 6 yards. He also had one catch for 35 yards.
Johnny Evanchick returned to form tonight with 2 touchdown passes while tallying 95 yards on 6 of 10 passing. He did the big damage with his legs however as Evanchick tacked up 66 yards on just 5 carries. Zach Hackelmen returned to the lineup tonight with 2 catches for 21 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagle defense was firm once again tonight as they hd ato deal with the 3 headed rushing monster of Whitmer and they shut them down. The Panthers were held to 109 yards on 28 carries with most of that yardage coming late.
A good kick return by Colin Tedesco allowed the Eagles to start the game near midfield at their own 42-yard line. Big runs from Evanchick of 21 yards and passes to Noah Ratchford of 17 yards put them inside the redzone right away. A 6-yard touchdown a few plays later by Brandon White put the Eagles on top 7-0 with 9:17 to play in the first half.
After the Eagles forced a three and out, their next drive began at the Panther 44-yard line and it only took one play to make it work. Brandon White cut through the left side of the line to clearance and went in to score. A one play drive made it 14-0 with 7:37 to go in the first quarter.
Next time around, the Panthers turned it over on downs as they went for it on third and four from their own 39-yard line. This provided the Eagles with another short field. A 9-play drive led to a 15-yard touchdown pass to Noah Ratchford as the Eagles faced three third downs on the drive and converted every time. They now led 21-0 with 56 seconds still to play in the first quarter.
The next Eagles drive began after another great stop by their defense. This time they had to go quite a way as they began the drive on their own 20-yard line. A key play coming on third down when Evanchick took it 33 yards all the way to the Panther 35-yard line. A few moments later it was a Langston Lucas conversion on fourth down to keep the drive alive at the Panther 19. The line play from the Eagles was wearing the Panther line down. The drive resulted in a field goal of 25 yards from Will Lavelle, increasing the Eagle lead to 24-0 with 4:04 to play in the opening half.
A great kick return by Kevion Moore handed the Panthers the ball to start their next drive at the Eagles 21-yard line, by far their best field position of the first half. A few plays later, the Panthers converted a 4th down touchdown pass from 10 yards out to Kevion Moore. The kick was blocked and the score remained 24-6 with 2:32 to play in the half.
The scoring wasn’t done yet as a failed onside kick for the Panthers handed the Eagles yet another short field. The Eagles got Hackleman involved and after a run by him, a pass to him from 15 yards out scored in the corner of the endzone. This increased the Eagle lead to 31-6 with 1:14 to play in the opening half. Hackleman had two catches on the drive and one run.
A Braylen Adams interception began the second half on a high note for the Eagles at midfield. A 45-yard pitch to Brandon White brought the ball to the Panthers 5-yard line seconds later. One play later it was Ty Buchanan with a 5-yard jaunt to score and strike the running clock at 38-6 with 10:11 to play in the second half. The third quarter ended by that same score.
