John Cena Final Opponent Tournament Off to Rough Start

At this past weekend’s SNME, it was announced that a 16-man Tournament would determine who would face John Cena in his final match.  They mentioned how some names involved in the tournament don’t even work for the company which quickly led to speculation of Chris Jericho,  Edge and Jeff Hardy as favorites to possibly come into WWE for a brief run and boost interest for the tournament.  While that could still very well happen, the first four names mentioned on Monday Night were seen as a giant bust.  The first matches announced were:

  • Rusev vs. Damian Priest
  • Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Sheamus

Now, while both Sheamus and Rusev have a brief history with Cena, that was over a decade ago, and in the case of Sheamus, nearly 15 years ago and neither feud was all that memorable.  Also, while I truly believe that both Nakamura and Damian Priest would have a serviceable match with Cena, neither would make any sense at all.  Perhaps I could make a case for Priest getting the biggest win of his career as a face, but even then, I don’t know.  None of the four names seem practical and it came across flat.

Nick Aldis will reveal four Smackdown names next week, with the favorites to be named being Aj Styles, Carmello Hayes, The Miz and Sami Zayn.

Only time will tell, but this is off to a rough start.
