Midview Middies Outlast Amherst Comets 14-7 in Overtime

Four quarters was not enough to decide a winner between the Midview Middies and Amherst Comets. In a defensive slugfest, Middies prevailed by a score of 14-7 in overtime. Brennen Newton’s do-it-all performance was a big reason why. He racked up 90 passing yards, 34 rushing yards, 1 catch, and an interception on the night.

The Middies defense set the tone early when Newton intercepted Comets QB Cy Christensen on their opening drive. The Comets had a strong scoring chance on the following possession. After driving down to the 5-yard line, Christensen was stuffed on 4th down to keep the game scoreless.

Midview pulled out some trickery in the 2nd quarter. On 4th down from midfield, they ran a fake punt and Brennen Newton converted with a 20-yard run. But, that did not lead to any points as they ended up turning it over on downs. Another strong drive for Midview set them up for a field goal try just before halftime, but Kaiden Vonya’s kick sailed wide right.

The first score of the night finally came when Marcus McMahon broke loose for a 23-yard touchdown. That gave the Middies a 7-0 lead in the 3rd quarter. The Comets responded with a strong drive deep into Middies territory. On 4th down from the 6-yard line, Christensen was stopped short again by a group of Middies defenders.

A fumble by the other Middies QB Shay Williams gave the ball right back to the Comets with great field position. This time Christensen would not be denied. His 6-yard touchdown run tied things up at 7 with 4:43 left to go.  After forcing Midview to punt, two big completions from Christensen to Jack Coleman had Amherst in field goal range. However, the 35-yard kick was no good and the game went to overtime tied at 7.

In overtime, Marcus McMahon rattled off a few strong runs to get the Middies down to the 1-yard line. Then, Sawyer McMillin found the end zone to put them in front 14-7. A penalty and a sack by Mateo Rodriguez put the Comets in a big hole to begin their drive. Christensen was then intercepted by De’Mere Gray to end the game and give the Middies the victory.
