The Avon Eagles and Avon Lake Shoremen added another chapter to their long, heated rivalry. Behind 5 touchdown passes and 338 yards from QB Blake Elder, it was the Eagles who rolled to a 43-12 victory.
It started off great for the Shoremen. Their defense forced a turnover on the second play of the game after recovering a fumble by Eagles running back Michael Colburn. Michael Summerfield then found the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown. The Eagles blocked the extra point to keep the score 6-0.
The Eagles offense immediately responded and took a 7-6 lead on a 2-yard touchdown by Colburn. After a field goal from the Shoremen, Blake Elder connected with Grant Barr for a 41-yard score to make it a 14-9 game. The Shoremen had a chance to regain the lead on the following drive. However, Trevor Maly deflected QB Dawson TenBrink’s pass away for a turnover on downs.
Grant Barr’s second receiving touchdown of the night put Avon up 21-9. Avon Lake had another strong scoring chance right before halftime. Their long drive was interrupted by a delay due to the scoreboard going out. A few plays after the game resumed, TenBrink was intercepted in the end zone by Avon linebacker Jack Goldian.
The Shoremen added a field goal on their opening possession of the second half. Blake Elder and the Eagles offense then went right down the field to extend their lead to 29-12. This time it was Fin Jerdonek hauling in the touchdown pass from Elder.
TenBrink was intercepted by Jairel Fenton late in the 3rd quarter. The Eagles capitalized on the turnover with a 25-yard touchdown from Elder to Caeden Bennett. Elder threw his 5th touchdown of the night on the next drive, a 72-yarder to Jerdonek to make it 43-12.
