RUPP FIELD – Friday night felt like playoff football in September in Shaker Heights
In a game defined by toughness, big plays, and late drama, the Brunswick Blue Devils delivered their first Greater Cleveland Conference victory of the season, holding off the Red Raiders 21-14 in a fourth-quarter thriller.
Brunswick (2-3, 1-1 GCC) wasted little time setting the tone, looking to spoil Shaker’s annual homecoming game. On the opening possession, senior wide receiver Landen Kirchner took a fly sweep 13 yards into the end zone, capping a run-heavy 13-play drive and giving the Devils a 7-0 lead.
Shaker Heights (1-4, 0-2 GCC) punched back late in the first quarter. After trading punts with the Blue Devil, senior quarterback Quinn Malone found former QB turned wideout Jacire Eaddy streaking down the seam for a 30-yard touchdown, tying the game at 7-7 with 1:57 left in the first quarter.
From there, defenses settled in. Neither side cracked the scoreboard until midway through the third quarter, when Brunswick began to grind down the clock using their ground game. Behind senior quarterback Sean Barnett, the Devils orchestrated back-to-back drives of 14 and 11 plays, chewing nearly 13 minutes off the game clock. Both ended with senior kicker Vinny DiTeodoro splitting the uprights from 42 and 40 yards, nudging Brunswick ahead 13-7 with 7:47 remaining in the fourth.
Shaker Heights wasn’t done. On the ensuing drive, after being backed onto their own five-yard line, Malone became alive. The gutsy signal caller heaved up a pass near the Blue Devils’ sideline, connecting with Eaddy for a 43-yard connection, then finding senior wide receiver Isaac Fadel for a 29-yard touchdown pass to swing the Raiders ahead, 14-13, with just over five minutes left.
The Devils answered in huge fashion. Kirchner returned the kickoff for 45 yards. Four plays later, senior RB Eli Nichols shed many tackles for a 34-yard touchdown, giving Brunswick the late 21-14 lead.
The defense made sure it stood. With Shaker Heights driving in the final minute, senior defensive back Brayden Miles jumped Malone’s pass intended for Eaddy, intercepting it to seal Brunswick’s first conference win.
